BOOK FOUR: CHAPTER 20 – Paulos Dino Kantor

CHAPTER 20 – Paulos Dino Kantor

BOOK FOUR

It was early afternoon when Raphael and his party arrived back in Medina in the midst of a rainstorm. They hurriedly threw their luggage into a couple of waiting viscars and drove through the village to the golden gate outside the VaCoupe Family compound. No one was there to greet them, so the men carried the luggage to the solarium, while a couple of the Eagles went to garage the viscars. When they finally made their way through the house to the family room, curious to see what was going on, they were greeted with the aroma of brewing tea and a couple of trays filled with refreshments.

Mazzie came out and greeted the men and explained what was going on: “Raphael, it would seem little Paulos is eager to greet the world. Lorenna’s water broke at dawn and her contractions began soon afterward. Master Leu and Master Zang are with her now, as is Lady Arrina and some of the staff women, with their assorted linens, buckets, and tools if anything is needed. Raimundo advised me that you would be arriving soon so we got some tea and food for you. I know it was a long trip from Alfaedus. I hope it was fruitful and interesting. Now, I must get some tonics and elixirs ready for the physicians should Lorenna needs anything.”

Raimundo and Francis Polaño finally made their way into the family room and filled Raphael and Francis in on what was happening. Raimundo exclaimed, “Nephew! Your timing is exquisite. Lorenna started her birthing process early this morning. An army of helpers has been activated and the physicians are standing by if their assistance is required. I’m sure your Lady will appreciate the fact that you are now home safely and will soon, hopefully, be able to meet your new son.”

“I want to go see her, but know I’ll just be in the way…” replied a slightly nervous father-to-be. “She is so narrow hipped compared even with Julia. Jychondria’s Rita is built better to carry and deliver than my Lorenna.”

“Well, according to Master Mei Li, she is doing well. He is coaching Lorenna on a breathing technique to assist with the birth and keeping her mind on something other than the pain,” replied Raimundo. “Now, drink some more tea and eat something, Raphael. It will all get sorted in a matter of hours. How was the trip to Alfaedus?”

“Good…interesting… the people of Alfaedus are very different. My long-time Eagle, Paul Dominguez is rather unusual compared to the rest of his people, although he is originally from there,” replied Raphael. He turned to his son/nephew, Francis VaCoupe, and said, “Francis – tell your great-uncle what we found on Alfaedus…”

“Well, when we landed, we were greeted by one of our hosts, whose people handed all of us long gray cloaks to wear. It seems that the air field gets quite dusty due to the winds carrying soil from nearby plowed fields. Alfaedus is cooler than Medina but looks more desolate. We couldn’t see any trees outside the city and inside the city there were few gardens. However, quite a bit of agriculture is done there in the countryside, with the farmers bringing their produce into town three times a week to sell directly to the townspeople.

“Yes, it was all a bit odd – a very different culture than what we have observed on other worlds thus far. The people are for the main tall and thin, but I also saw some who were short and squarish in shape. I would venture to say that our Paul Dominguez is very handsome for someone who is from Alfaedus! They do seem to be a very traditional people, not given to adjusting well to change,” commented Gareth. Master Zang and Master Tzulo were encouraging the young men to report on their observations and then to write out reports which they would be able to review later if they needed to remember the details of what they had seen and experienced.

Raphael smiled and patted his stepson’s shoulder since he was sitting next to him, “And, that, Uncle, is a brief summary of what we saw in Alfaedus. They are a very spiritual people and during their great festivals will spend much time in preparation for the solemn event, both in fasting and prayer. They don’t seem to be a very happy people, not like the Morovians… at least from what little we were able to witness. However, the couple of leaders we were able to meet seemed pleased that Francis and I are taking the time to visit as many of the worlds as we can fit into our schedule. I don’t think they felt threatened by my being the regent now that they have met me in person!”

Raimundo had to chuckle and replied, “Well, I don’t think any of our Family has been able to travel to the other worlds much after the war descended upon us. For the main, Demetrius just traveled between Alyona and Medina… and we know how that worked out for him…”

“Yes, very unfortunate, but things do seem to be working out despite the setbacks for the Family. Later on, Raimundo, I will want to speak to both you and Andros about our special project, Nemo, to see how he is managing to ‘fit in’. I want to know whether or not we should consider an alternative solution to handling him as he could live a long life now that he is healthy again. This reminds me; I’ll also need to have a report from Master Zang as to Nemo’s general health. Hopefully, his heart condition has improved, else he will not live too long,” said Raphael, laying out his thoughts and expectations for the next couple of days. Although he didn’t run the household like Raimundo and Andros, he was concerned about certain aspects, especially how his former brother was handling being home.

Raimundo took a sip of tea, a refreshing blend of mints with a little dried rosehip added for some tang. He changed the subject by asking, “Are you going to take Francis and Gareth with you to the next High Council?”

“Yes, if they want to go, although I intend to leave Lorenna home here in Medina so she and the baby can rest. It’s best for them not to travel until the baby is at least six months old. And I want to be sure that Lorenna’s health has not been too strained by this birth. How are Lady Ella and Remmie doing as their pregnancies advance? Did they miss their mates while we were gone? It was only a week-long trip. I don’t want to spend much more time away now… from Lorenna or just being home. I have to go to High Council once a month which takes up at least 10 days as it is. Add a trip or short tour and time away can add up quickly,” replied Raphael. “As for your question, the young men can stay here or go with me. They need to consult with their mates to see what the ladies would prefer. Either Master Zang or Master Leu can attend me, and the other physician can remain in Medina to take care of any health needs for the ladies and other members of our household. Has Carlos been assisting the physicians and Mazzie?”

“Yes, Carlos has been busy concocting various herbal remedies, tonics, and elixirs under Mazzie’s expert guidance. He has also ordered and had planted several new varieties of herbs to add to our medicinal herbal garden. Your younger cousin is becoming quite an expert with herbal medicines. His father, Robertio, would have been proud of him,” replied Raimundo. Robertio had been the youngest of three brothers and died during the long wars leaving his only child, Carlos, an orphan, to be brought up by his uncle Raimundo and Mazzie, his paternal great-grandmother.

Oh, good. Carlos is an excellent herbalist already. I am certain he could probably assist Mazzie when it comes to instructing some of the young priestesses at the Shemont… if they allow male instructors on the premises, that is,” replied Raphael. “Has Carlos ever considered getting mated, yet?”

Raimundo looked thoughtful for a few minutes before answering and then said, “You know, he really hasn’t said much about that particular topic, but I have a sense that when he meets the right young lady, he will be prepared to become a husband. He is an intelligent and helpful young man to have around the household, plus he also visits some of our villagers who might need something like a sleeping draught. However, few of our people need such things, the Medinians generally being a hearty lot stemming from their tough nomadic roots.”

“Well, he is a VaCoupe, so we probably better start looking for a suitable mate for our shy healer. A healing priestess might be a good mate for him. We can request suggestions from Lady Amethyst and Lady Anna, who both have healing priestesses in their retinues,” replied Raphael. “She would have to be someone who is also sensitive and kind, as Carlos has always been a thoughtful young man.”

Raimundo chuckled, again, “Lady Anna thought you a bit incorrigible when setting up possible matches! Still, right now, Lady Arrina is busy taking care of your mate, Lady Lorenna! Let the ladies finish this task first before handing them another one!”

As it so happened, the delivery went on for another twelve hours so into the night. Raphael and Francis stayed up, holding vigil, one for his mate, the other for his mother. At about midnight, a tired Lady Arrina appeared in the archway leading to the family room and declared, “Lord Raphael, congratulations! You are the new father of another healthy boy child! Give your mate a few minutes to recover and our ladies time to clean-up. Then, you can visit your mate and the new arrival. I understand you already have a name for the boy, Paulos?”

“Yes, Lady Arrina – we have already been in telepathic contact with him,” replied a proud and much relieved Raphael. “Would you like some tea, my lady?”

“Yes, I will take some tea and have a brief rest before returning home to the Shemont. Would you mind lending me one of your Eagles for an escort?” replied Lady Arrina.

Oh, certainly… Loki would probably be quite willing to escort you back to the Temple. As a Feline, he has excellent night vision. Loki?” asked Raphael of his Feline Eagle who was standing nearby.

The great Feline nodded his tawny head and growled, “I would be honored to see that you get home safely, my lady. Would you prefer to walk, or should I get out one of the viscars?”

“I would like to walk… the air is probably quite fresh after the earlier rains. I need to get the smell of blood out of my nose… if you know what I mean – it was a long ordeal for Lorenna, but she managed very well, my lord,” commented Lady Arrina. “Still, I am glad you thought to have your Veyan physicians on hand to make sure of her health. She is not built to carry many more children. A girl would be preferable the next time if you mean to have more children, my lord. Your girls tend to be more petite if I remember correctly.”

“Well, we’ll certainly allow Lady Lorenna time to rest up before thinking about embarking on making another child, my lady,” replied Raphael. He personally wouldn’t mind having another girl child added to his family but wanted to be careful with his precious mate’s life before considering the possibility of yet another child being added to his already considerable family. He took a deep breath and sipped some more tea, pausing to pour out more for Francis, who was still present. “How are you doing, Francis? You just got another brother… a half-brother as it were. He’s apparently the reincarnation of your former great-great uncle Paulos Dino, a commander in the Fleet who died in the wars. Interesting he chose to come in for Lorenna and me.”

“Perhaps he can become one of my supporters in the future, Father,” suggested Francis, thinking ahead… it was now just a matter of years before he would officially become the Lord of the Pleiades, a serious responsibility for a relatively young man to take on.

I’m sure he will, son, but first he needs to grow up, go to school and perhaps serve in the Command for a while, if that is his intent in this lifetime. We will see. And now I have about three more years with little Daniel before we cart him off to Airus for his formal schooling. I hope that goes well for the youngster; he is quite intelligent,” remarked Raphael. He carefully set down his tea cup and looked over at Lady Arrina, asking her, “My lady, do you think it is okay for us to visit mate and mother?”

Lady Arrina nodded and replied, “Yes, my lord; see, there are the ladies now returning to the kitchens with all their tools of office and washing. It should be fine now for you to visit, now. The bed should be re-made, and your mate freshened up from her exertions. Now, if Master Loki will be so good as to escort me back to the Shemont?”

“Thank you, Lady Arrina, for assisting tonight,” said Raphael as he stood up. He gave the experienced priestess a deep respectful bow and started towards the stairs leading to the sleeping quarters. “We’ll bring little Paulos to the Shemont for his blessing in about a week or so… if you can pass that news off to Lady Amethyst for me!”

“Certainly, my lord – visit your mate and see that you get to bed soon. You, too, Francis!” came the mild admonishment from the priestess as she gracefully walked towards the audience room to exit the huge old house.

Raphael and Francis walked through the now silent hallway. The female staff members who had lent their hands to the various tasks associated with the birthing had all returned either to their rooms or homes for the night. Raphael was seldom awake during the middle of the night. For a large house filled with many inhabitants, it was remarkably quiet, almost hushed. Finally reaching his rooms, Raphael quietly greeted the Veyan physicians who were just finishing up with their brief post-delivery examination of mother and child. Raphael asked, “How are they, Master Leu?”

The Veyan physician paused to give Raphael a deep bow and then replied, “Your mate is napping now. We did a quick initial scan of both mother and child; they are both quite healthy. Despite being slender, Lady Lorenna is very strong and performed her part very well. Your son, Paulos, is well-formed and very handsome. You should be pleased to have another beautiful child in your family.”

“I am – now, may I see them?” asked an impatient father.

Master Mei Li smiled, and replied, “Of course, Lord Raphael – you can see them now.”

Raphael and Francis entered the great suite of the Lord of the Pleiades which was now, temporarily, Raphael and Lorenna’s. There the two men found Lorenna stretched out on the huge bed with a tiny bundle in her arms. She was asleep but woke as she sensed their presence. “Raphael, Francis… you’re home! The women told me you were, but I was busy… Do you want to see your new son, my love? He’s very handsome,” said Lorenna as she handed up the baby to her mate. “Golden blonde hair like mine, but his eyes…”

Curious, Raphael peeled away the swaddling cloth covering the child and heard a little mewling cry. The little fellow’s face was screwed up in a little cry. Then, his eyes opened. Instead of the usual blue eyes of a newborn, two blue green eyes like Raphael’s looked up at his father with a wide-eyed stare. Raphael sighed, “Oh, he’s beautiful – like Daniel, but different, too. I see his uncle’s features a bit… my eyes, your hair – he’s perfect! Francis, look at your new brother, Paulos!”

Francis bent over to peer at the little fellow who stared back at his half-brother. He commented, “They’re so tiny when born… but not for long.”

“Well, my lad, you’ll soon be carrying your own little boy around sometime this month,” replied Raphael. “Now, Francis, visit your poor mate. She’s probably wondering what happened to you. I want some private time with your mother and your new brother.”

“Then, goodnight, Father, Mother – we’ll see you in the morning. Bring the baby out to the breakfast room so everyone can see the new little Kantor-VaCoupe!” said Francis. “What is this now, Father? Your fifth son?”

“Yes, Francis – five boys and two girls. Now, go; I’m tired and I am sure that Lorenna is exhausted after her labors. We’ll have to feed the youngster soon and probably won’t sleep well the rest of the night!” said Raphael. He was a bit more experienced than Francis in such matters.

Francis gave his stepfather a bow, blew a kiss to his mother and left the room. Heaving a relieved sigh, Raphael gave Lorenna a kiss on her brow and stood up so he could strip off the uniform and cloak he had worn on his trip to Alfaedus. Lorenna asked, “How was the trip, Raphael?”

“Interesting – the Alfaedians are an odd people, very conservative and stuck in their ways,” replied Raphael, “but our guides were very helpful and solicitous. We were shown around those parts of one of their cities where they ‘allow’ guests to see. They tend to be a secretive, stand-offish sort of people, not given to overt expressions of joy. Still, we had an interesting time and Francis can tick off another planet on his list of those to visit. I don’t think I would prefer to visit there, again.”

“Well, you look tired and before Master Zang chides you for not getting your rest, you better climb into bed with me. Could you put little Paulos in his basket for me?” asked Lorenna.

Raphael gently lifted up the baby, removed the swaddling and then placed the child in the lined basket, putting a little blanket over it. He gently stroked the child’s soft cheek and was a little surprised when the baby lifted up a tiny fist and grasped his finger with a tight grip. He chuckled and commented, “Oh, I think our little Paulos is going to be a very strong man. He already has quite a grip! Odd that; babies don’t usually develop strength in their hands until they are much older.” The amused father heard his little boy chuckle and say: “Yes, Papa; I will be a very strong man!

Lorenna, Raphael, and Paulos actually managed to sleep through the remainder of the night. Sensing movement outside in the hall, Raphael helped Lorenna to sit up in bed, propped up with pillows and attempt a first feeding. The baby latched on quickly and began to suckle on his mother’s rich milk. Lorenna winced a bit and remarked, “Oh, I am glad he doesn’t have teeth yet! It’s been a while since I felt this sensation, Raphael – I, we will have to adjust our lives a bit, won’t we?”

“Yes, my love,” replied Raphael.  “I want you to remain here in Medina with one of our physicians. I have a sense that Francis and Gareth will choose to remain here, too, to be near their mates, as well as Lady Arla. You won’t be without company while I attend to my duties in Alyona. Francis and Gareth can’t remain here every month, else people will think I’ve done away with Francis or am hiding him. Yet, until his mate safely delivers his first child, I would prefer he stay here with her as much as possible for emotional support. I have my aides and Eagles to keep me company, although I would much prefer yours and little Paulos. Perhaps when Paulos is about six months old, we can all travel to Milan to see your brother Adamos and Lady Tina. The city should be stabilized by then, I would think.”

Lorenna moved Paulos to her other breast and winced, again, as the little fellow eagerly latched on. She commented, “Oh, he is a hungry one. I expect he will grow quickly at this rate. I feel comfortable staying here in Medina while you are working in Alyona. There’s the garden, Uncle Raimundo, Mazzie, and others to keep me company, plus I can spend some time with little Daniel. It should be interesting for the two brothers to interact. They look somewhat alike, just being different blondes, but both with your beautiful eyes, Raphael. Still, I’ll look forward to when we are able to travel, together, once more, even to Alyona.”

After Lorenna finished the initial feeding, Paulos promptly dropped off to sleep. Raphael placed him gently into his basket and asked, “Shall we have Milo watch over the little fellow while we take a bath? I’m sure you are eager to feel cleaner than can be managed with a sponge bath in bed.”

Lorenna giggled, “Oh, you’re starting the little fellow out early with his introductions to your Eagles. Yes, let’s try and see if he reacts… or how Milo reacts to the encounter. I would love to have a bath, now!”

After donning robes, Raphael invited Milo to enter into their sanctuary and presented little Paulos to him. Upon seeing the baby, the great Feline got a very tender look on his tawny face, sat down, and asked Raphael to hand him the basket with the child in it. When Milo had secured the basket in his strong arms, he began to purr, closing his eyes and gently rocking the basket. Lorenna and Raphael looked at each other in astonishment, then quietly left the contented Feline guarding his little charge. When they reached the bathing room, they looked at each other and shook their blonde heads. Raphael commented first, “I don’t think we need to worry about Paulos being cared for if we have to leave for a few minutes. Milo just took to the little fellow immediately, which makes me curious to find out if this is, yet another soul somehow connected to the Feline race, like me.”

“I’m sure Paulos probably was. I wasn’t around him much as a child but heard stories about how prescient he could be. It was really too bad that he died in the wars,” replied Lorenna as she soaped up with some of Mazzie’s hard herbal soap. “Oh, I love this soap; it makes my hair and skin feel so soft after a bath.”

Raphael smiled gently as he watched his mate splash about in the water. Lorenna enjoyed the soft fresh water almost as much as he did. He said, “When we’re done here, let’s get dressed and take little Paulos out to the family room so we can introduce him to our extended family and friends.”

“Ohhhh, just a few more minutes in this lovely water. I’m just a bit sore from the birthing but seem to be recovering quicker than with my previous births. Perhaps it is because you and I are more secure in our relationship than I felt with Esturias. I tell you now; I don’t miss him being in my life, even if I catch a glimpse of him every once in a while, when we’re out in the garden. Commander Andros does keep a sharp eye out on Nemo to keep him in line for you and Raimundo,” replied Lorenna. Finally, she stretched and began to climb out of the pool. Wrapping a large towel around her body, she remarked, “Now, I need to work off so of this extra poundage, but I don’t think that will take long, not while Paulos has such an appetite.”

“You’ll have to eat more to keep up with the little chap,” replied Raphael with a grin. He was ever so grateful Lorenna came through the birthing experience without too much pain and effort. “Now, let us get dressed and see what the rest of the family has to say about our newest recruit!”

About an hour later, Raphael and Lorenna made their way to the family room. Raphael was holding little Paulos in his arms while Milo carried his basket. As the quartet (if you include the child) entered into the room, several people came over to see Paulos. Raphael had Milo put down the basket in the middle of the long table and then carefully placed little Paulos in it. Mazzie was the first to comment, “Raphael, another son that looks like you, except for the hair color – and actually, he does look a bit more like a Dino, but with a larger bone structure. He’s beautiful, my boy! Lorenna, how are you feeling, my dear? Do you need an elixir to boost your energy after that long ordeal?”

“Oh, thank you, Mazzie; I don’t mind if you do give me one of your famous elixirs. I’m still feeling a bit tired, but just having Raphael here to greet his new son has given me an uplift to my spirits,” replied Lorenna with a smile. She watched as the family members carefully peered into the basket. Paulos lay there peering up at everyone with a silly grin on his plump little face, blinking his great blue green eyes. Lorenna noted that Paulos’ hair was curly, very curly, so she asked her mate, “Did you have curly hair as a child, Raphael?”

Raphael laughed, “Oh, yes, I did… curly golden hair, which was hard to comb out when I got older… something Commander Monteras can attest to…Oh, Monteras, come look at our newest addition!”

The Morovian commander peered over Raphael’s shoulder to look at young Paulos, who was pawing the air with his little chubby legs to the amusement of the onlookers. Tomás commented, “He reminds me a little of you when you were younger, my lord – except he has a different eye color – the same one you have now. How extraordinary. Paulos might want to keep his hair a little shorter when grown. His hair looks like it might eventually be similar in texture, to Dante’s, his older brother. Have you introduced Paulos to little Daniel, yet?”

“No – we’re going to eat our breakfast, but first everyone wants to see our new family member,” replied a proud father. Raphael patted his mate’s hand, “Lorenna is doing well despite just giving birth.”

A short time later, Felipe appeared carrying little Daniel in his arms. When the tall Eagle saw Raphael, Lorenna, and all of the people gathered looking into a little basket, he knew the proud parents were showing off their new son. He asked if he could put stand Daniel on the bench so he could look, too. Family members kindly moved aside so Felipe could balance the little boy on the bench next to his father. Daniel leaned onto the table and peered over the rim of the basket. Then, he looked up into his father’s eyes as he pointed to Paulos and said, “Papa! Brother!”

Raphael smiled and replied, “Yes, Daniel – he’s your new brother!”

Breakfast was a slow affair that morning with all the excitement, people peering at the baby and making remarks between bites of food or drinking juice. Later, Raphael and Lorenna made their slow way out to the garden. It had rained during the night, but the sun was out and quickly drying out the surfaces, so Raphael was able to find a bench where they could sit, putting the basket on the ground. Raphael took Paulos up into his arms to give the baby an opportunity to see around the garden. Paulos gurgled and chirped as he felt the warmth of the sun on his little body.

The gardening crew were already out working, with Andros acting as their supervisor. The retired commander walked over to glance at the newcomer and congratulated Lady Lorenna on her accomplishment. Turning to Raphael, he also added, “Raimundo informed me that you requested a discussion regarding our ‘experiment’ – namely, how is Nemo faring in his new setting? I’ll report to your office this afternoon when the teams have quit work so we can have more privacy than out here in the garden. Off-hand, I would have to say that Nemo appears to be doing fairly well, right now.”

“Thank you, Andros,” replied Raphael. He sensed an unspoken ‘but’ in the conversation but decided to leave it until their more ‘official’ meeting on the subject. Raphael was not willing to spend important family time on someone who had been stripped of his right to even have a family. Hours later, Raphael did have his meeting regarding Nemo. Raimundo, Andros, and Master Zang all attended as each of the men had something to report on to Raphael.

Andros went first, “My lord, Nemo seems to be doing well when he is outside gardening. Apparently, he enjoys being out in the fresh air and the plants. He generally avoids speaking to anyone save myself and Samos, his usual companion. Since the other men have become more accustomed to his presence, they generally ignore him at this stage, although I occasionally catch someone or another staring at him curiously. Nemo looks more and more like a VaCoupe male, gaining back his color and has been putting on a bit more weight, mostly muscle from hauling around plants, tools, and buckets. I keep a sharp eye on him when family members are out in the garden, which tends to be more often now that the weather is cooler during the winter months. Your son, Daniel, does not go up to Nemo anymore; he seems to understand that Nemo is supposed to be left alone right now.”

Raphael nodded and replied, “Thank you for the report, Andros. Now, Raimundo, do you have anything to add regarding Nemo’s indoor duties?”

“Well, Nemo continues to work in the kitchen doing basic chores like peeling and chopping vegetables so they can be processed for soups or juicing. Flora and her helpers keep a sharp eye on him. Nemo is able to lift some of the heavy pots for the ladies but not the really large ones. He still needs to rebuild some muscle in order to manage that…,” replied Raimundo.  “As for other chores, occasionally I have utilized Nemo for basic painting jobs or scrubbing floors when we are cleaning up rooms that have not been inhabited for a long while. He really doesn’t have any experience with household chores like carpentry and so on, so we just assign him to very basic jobs. Andros or Jeremiah act as his supervisor when Nemo is inside the house. He is not allowed out into the common areas.”

“What’s your general opinion about Nemo even being here at the house, Uncle?” queried Raphael. “He’s been here for over a year and a half now. If necessary, I want to consider about alternative placements for him other than keeping Nemo here in Medina. Personally, I don’t feel sending him to Morova would be good for him or Morova. Adamos said he might be able to place him at a country estate outside of Milan on Maia… but, I have to know whether or not his health is up to such a move. Master Zang, have you or Master Leu been able to perform a recent health scan on Nemo?”

Master Mei Li looked rather thoughtful for a few minutes and then replied, “My lord, personally, I would not recommend that Nemo be moved to another planet. He still has a heart condition. Master Leu and I have done some work on the issue, but the root cause of this condition relates to his emotional and mental imbalances that still persist. Nemo has to decide to do some of that work himself, like you have on your own issues. Even if we were to do a massive amount of etheric surgery on him at this point, he would probably just recreate the problem, or another related one. I have given some thought about this issue for some time and have asked Lady Arrina if the Shemont sometimes utilizes male gardeners and staff to do basic household duties. She told me that the ladies rarely use males on the premises, but it does happen occasionally. It might be beneficial for Nemo to work at the Shemont a couple days per week, just to get a change of scenery. Being in the strong energies of the great Temple might prove to be beneficial for his mental and emotional well-being. I would suggest that you consult personally with Lady Arrina and Lady Amethyst regarding your thoughts about what to do with your… Nemo, my lord.”

Raphael took a deep breath. While he wasn’t a fan of his former brother, the sobering news that due to his choices and continued unbalanced mental/emotional state, that Nemo had effectively shortened his own life… well, he felt the bite of incipient tears. He leaned forward and discretely wiped the tears from his pale face and replied, “Well, thank you, Master Mei Li. I guess I will have to give Lady Amethyst a visit to see if we can produce a more permanent, humane solution for Nemo. He is now just over 350 years of age, slightly more than half of his father’s age when Lord Demetrius was killed in space. I would prefer not to be one of the instruments of my former brother’s early demise, but I am not sure that I want him to remain here at the family compound, especially since we are soon going to experience somewhat of a baby boom with two or more children expected within the year, from Lady Ella, Lady Remilla, and possibly Mistress DeAires. I guess I will need to meditate on the issue, myself, and see what I come up with. Thank you, gentlemen, for coming to this impromptu meeting. Now, I need to get some air outside and see if Felipe and Daniel are in the garden.”

Before Raphael left, Raimundo commented, “You know, Raphael, Francis is going to be the one who inherits the care of his former father when you hand the lordship over to your stepson. You might consult Francis and get his own opinion on what to do about Nemo in the future.”

“Oh, that’s true; in fact, Francis ought to be pulled more into decision-making for other topics as well since he will have to assume full responsibility for such things in the future. He might as well get used to being expected to give an opinion or two before I finalize things. He is in training for a very responsible role, so feeling the weight of making life-changing decisions for himself or others will be a good exercise for Francis,” replied Raphael. “Thank you, Uncle, for the suggestion.”

“You’re welcome, Nephew; sometimes you take on too much, Raphael. Other people need to pitch in and run their own lives,” replied Raimundo. “Have you considered what you are going to do once Francis becomes Lord of the Pleiades? Are you going to retire like you’ve wanted to for decades or take up something else?”

“I don’t know yet, Uncle. When I was visiting Airus and had that long talk with Lord Aeolus, he suggested that there would be something for me to do after I end my stint as Regent, but he wouldn’t say any more at the time. He just said that when I arrive at that door, I would walk through it without hesitation. I really haven’t thought beyond one month at a time. And now, I’ve been the Regent for over six months. I think the time will go quickly, so Francis does need to step up and take on more responsibility so he will be really ready when it comes time for me to step down from this particular role,” replied Raphael. “Well, I better find Francis and have at least a preliminary discussion with him about his blood father, Esturias – see, I even called him by his old name. I don’t know why I love the man, but I do.”

“You are soul mates, Raphael – I sense the two of you have played opposing roles to each other more than once,” replied Raimundo. “Well, I’ll let you go. Thank you for letting the rest of us aid you in coming to some sort of decision about the future of Nemo. It is pretty clear to me that if you had decided to keep him in the prison of the Alyona Castle, he would probably be dead already, especially with that heart condition of his. By keeping him here and safe, you have given him some more time to work on redeeming himself. At least he has endeavored to keep out of trouble while he’s been here. I know he isn’t very happy being a gardener; after all, he is a highly trained engineer and commander – but at least he is doing something more useful than staring at blank walls all day.”

After the meeting with the three men, Raphael took himself out to the garden and found Lorenna sitting with Paulos in her arms while Milo kept a careful watch. Daniel and his little cousins were playing in front of them, with Daniel toddling over to look at the baby every so often. As he approached the little gathering, Daniel ran over to his father and hugged his legs, so Raphael picked him up. A curious father asked, “Well, Daniel, what do you think of your little brother? Have you two been talking with each other, yet?”

“Yes, Papa – we talk… in our heads. Paulos doesn’t want to talk out loud, yet. I remember him when we all looked like Milo, but that was a very long time ago,” came the reply from his little son.

Raphael grinned at the comment coming from his serious little boy.  “Thank you, Daniel. I sense Paulos was one of the sons of Rigo. Am I correct?”

“Yes, Papa… brother,” nodded Daniel, grinning in reply, and then ran back to play with his cousins.

Raphael turned to Lorenna and commented, “I love how soul families return to each other even over vast stretches of what we call time. Time and space have no meaning when it comes to love. We can find each other once more, especially when we have cleared ourselves of our own doubts and fears.”

“It is wonderful to sit with you, Raphael and to enjoy the company of our children… and I want you to know that I regard Daniel as mine as though he was born of my body,” replied Lorenna, as she fondly gazed upon the children playing and looked down at her own son lying quietly in her lap, snoozing like a cat in the mild sunshine. Apparently, school was out for the day as Gareth and Francis appeared, each leading their mate by the hand to join the family group out in the garden. Fortunately, the gardening crew had already re-entered the house as they had other chores to do like preparation of the evening meal.

Francis laughed when he saw the little gathering and asked, “Father, may we join the family? The weather is so mild; it is a pleasure to be outside after studying so hard. The masters had some compassion for us and felt it a good time for us to get some fresh air and watch the children play. How are you doing, Mother? And little Paulos? He certainly looks snug in his little blanket.”

Lorenna answered quietly, not wanting to waken up the baby, “I am doing well, Francis. How is Lady Ella and Remilla? Are you ladies recovering from your morning sickness? Both of you look as if you could use a little sun to get some color back into your cheeks.”

“We are well, Mother,” replied Lady Ella. “We were sewing with Mistress Roxanee; she has been teaching us how to bead. It is a time-consuming, but worthwhile skill to learn as the results can be so beautiful. I will have to practice some more, however, before I commit my beadwork to a piece of beautiful silk. We are learning on simple cottons for now.”

The two ladies had also encouraged Roxanee to join them in the garden. Roxanee was still a bit shy around the family members and staff, but Raphael noted the young Morovian woman was endeavoring to observe the customs of the local people, while retaining some of her own unique qualities. Knowing that Roxanee was used to working quite hard all day at home in PoLiafee, it was a major adjustment for her to ‘dawdle’ outside in the garden and not put any useful work in… but the Morovian woman found she enjoyed walking around sniffing and touching the plants as the VaCoupes had collected many interesting and diverse species of herbs, vegetables, and ornamentals through the years. Carlos sometimes took her on little tours giving her a quick course on the uses of many of the culinary and medicinal herbs. In the end, Roxanee volunteered to assist Carlos in gathering herbs when he was going to concoct some of the tonics and elixirs under the supervision of Mazzie, his great grandmother. It was a way she could offer her services to the family even as her mate, Salaniel, served Raphael by working in unison with Master Polaño in their mutual office. Master Francis was giving Salaniel instruction on acting as a future steward for running Alyona Castle and assisting Raimundo in the running of Medinian estates. The older assistant had let Raphael and his namesake, Francis VaCoupe, know that he would be retiring soon after Francis became Lord of the Pleiades, so Salaniel now was a student as well as young Francis and Gareth.

Salaniel had actually not gone on the trip to the Planet of Alfaedus, due to his own choice. He was concerned that his new mate be able to have him around as the only other Morovian in the household in case she was feeling overwhelmed with her new role as a mate and her new environment. Raphael was hopeful that the new mates would also adjust to being with each other, as Salaniel was still fairly shy even around his trusted friends.

One day, Raphael observed Salaniel pulling his shy mate out of the front door of the great house, his reddish-brown face flushed with excitement. Roxanee appeared somewhat embarrassed, so Raphael was surprised for a moment. He tuned into the Morovian woman’s energy field and then smiled and said, “Am I correct in saying I should be offering congratulations to you, Salaniel and Roxanee?”

Roxanee shyly nodded, blushing, and holding her middle with two hands as if protecting a secret. Salaniel didn’t hesitate, but proudly announced, “My lord, Roxanee is expecting. We are going to have a child!”

“Oh, Lorenna, we’ll have to hire some teaching priestesses or nurses to take care of all the children! When I was raising my children, we had one at a time,” said Raphael. Then, he remembered, “Well, Astrig and Brunella were expecting at the same time as Julia and the babies were all born within months of each other. When they were old enough to start being tutored, Commander Monteras was kept very busy. I wonder if he wouldn’t mind tutoring some of our young ones, again, while living here in Medina?”

Lorenna smiled and suggested that Salaniel find a place for his mate to sit in the shade and rest. “How are you feeling, Roxanee, besides a little nervous?”

The dignified Morovian woman pulled herself upright and replied, “I feel well enough right now, my lady. I will speak to Mazzie and Lady Arla to get guidance on how to keep my body strong while I carry this baby. I do miss my mother now!”

The next evening, while the family was finishing up dinner, Lady Ella suddenly gasped and flushed with embarrassment. She said, “Oh, my water has broken! Could I have help getting to my rooms?”

Raphael signed Eagle Paul to gently lift up the very pregnant young woman and carry her safely back to the rooms she shared with Master Francis VaCoupe, and then he began to contact everyone who would be needed for the delivery. He headed to his office and soon ran into the two Veyan physicians who were already headed towards Francis’ and Ella’s suite. He yelled, “I’ll contact the Shemont and see if Lady Arrina and some of her ladies can get here quickly. Raimundo, could you notify the kitchen staff to heat some water and prepare towels and the like?”

As the staff and healers scattered to attend to their tasks, Raphael returned back to the family room looking for Francis. He requested Loki to fetch some tea and refreshments so the men could comfortably start their vigil for Lady Ella and her baby.

Francis and Gareth were sitting together in the family room. Francis was leaning on the table holding his head in his hands. He looked up when he sensed Raphael had returned. “Oh, Father… I begin to understand how you feel when…”

“Yes, it’s quite natural to feel a little nervous, Francis, but Lady Ella is being well-looked after by quite a few people. Now, Gareth… when is your little one expected?” asked Raphael turning to his former Eagle.

The tall warrior looked a little uncomfortable discussing such things, but he finally replied, “It should be about another month, my lord… then, you will be a grandfather once more.”

“Well, we’ll have to invite your grandfather to come and visit his great-grandson after he is born,” commented Raphael, “Then perhaps Lord Efrem and I can be reconciled on so many levels and he will forgive me for finding you and Lord Adamos your beautiful mates!”

“Oh, my lord… Father… Grandfather is so strict. I’m sure he’s upset with you, especially since Lord Adamos brought home a mate from his short ‘family’ visit to Medina. I wonder just how long it will take for the new couple to…” Gareth stopped, blushing again.

Raphael chuckled and replied, “Well, we will certainly find out soon. I’ll be contacting Lord Adamos after Lady Ella delivers to let my brother-in-law know that he is now a great-uncle. And I’ll have to contact Lord Da’vid and Lord Aeolus in Ostta to let them know that Lady Ella has successfully delivered. I’m not sure just what the relationship Lady Ella has with those two men other than she is a Kadish cousin through her mother.”

Francis lifted up his head and replied, “Lady Ella is a third cousin to Lord Da’vid, so a third or fourth cousin to you, Father. We shared a lot about our mutual backgrounds when we were on our honeymoon on Towan. I really haven’t had a chance to sit down and speak to you for long, with all our classes and our various trips to Morova, Alyona and Alfaedus, sir.”

“Well, son; if you have anything to tell me, we probably have lots of time before your mate delivers her child. Sometimes the first one comes quickly or takes a long time. We’ll find out soon enough…” said Raphael, patting Francis on his back. “Now, drink some tea or if you’re feeling like you need a bit of air, we can go out in the garden and sit there for a while. I’ll let the Eagles know where to find us.”

When the men were seated outside, Raphael posed a question, “Francis, earlier I held a discussion with Commander Andros, Raimundo and Master Zang…”

“What was it about, Father?” asked a curious Francis.

About your… Nemo,” replied Raphael. “Whether or not we need to keep him here, return him to the prison, or find another place for him to be kept.”

“What did the men say about… Nemo?” asked a slightly anxious Francis – an interesting reaction thought Raphael.

Well, Master Zang was pretty firm in his belief that it wouldn’t be in the best interest for Nemo to be moved right now. Apparently, he has a heart condition that may end up significantly shortening his life, especially if he were placed under any more stress like he would apt to be if moved to another location or planet,,” replied Raphael. “Raimundo was pretty sure that Nemo would have already succumbed… died if we had not removed him from his prison home. I remember he was in pretty poor shape when I visited him before deciding to bring him home. I just want to get your input on this subject as Nemo is your blood father – and despite anything he did to me or your grandfather – he is still family. If he manages to live long enough, you will be the one responsible for overseeing his care, Francis. So, I wanted to see how you feel about him even being here at the house.”

“Well, his presence here doesn’t bother me, Father – and you’ve been more of a father figure for me than Nemo ever was. He was an absentee father at best and barely ever visited his own father while Lord Demetrius was still with us,” replied Francis, looking over the garden. It was later in the day, so the gardening crew was not outside but had gone inside the house to work on other chores or if villagers had returned to their own houses. “Are you concerned about the children, Father? I have noticed that little Daniel isn’t going over to Nemo any more now that he is older. I doubt my own child would be drawn to Nemo, but I’ll certainly instruct Andros and Lady Ella to keep an eye out for that kind of behavior. Perhaps one of your other Eagles wouldn’t mind looking after the children discretely so Nemo is kept away from contact with them?”

“Raimundo suggested that Nemo be allowed to go to the Shemont to work, feeling that if he is in the vicinity of the Temple, he might begin to slowly heal his emotional body, for that seems to be the sticking point for him now,” replied Raphael. “Master Zang was of the opinion that even if he and Master Leu were to do etheric surgery on Nemo like they performed on my body, that due to his psychological trauma which he has yet to resolve, he would just recreate his heart condition. Nemo is feeling a profound sense of shame for what he did, although he might not understand exactly what happened. All I know was the day I walked into that conference room; your father was no longer the man I had known years before. He wasn’t as far gone as my own father had been, to the point that he attempted to kill me – but he had brought a complete set of compromised commanders into the same building as the Lord of the Pleiades. Even now, I have to shake my head and wonder at how… stupid and misguided he was to allow his emotions and jealousy to overcome his common sense. Your father was a good officer once, although he had a tendency to be arrogant and impulsive and it got him into trouble more than once.”

Francis shook his head and said, “I can’t say I truthfully understand my father at all and frankly have been happier to have Grandfather and you in my life than ever I was with my own blood father. I guess you would have to speak to Lady Amethyst to see if she would even allow Nemo to enter the premises of the Temple compound. What kind of work would he be able to do there, do you think?”

“I’m not sure – I do know the Temple has some of their own gardens and courtyards. Perhaps some simple jobs like sweeping the galleries and porches would also be something Nemo could manage,” replied Raphael. “I know I will have to arrange for an interview with Lady Amethyst to see how she feels about Nemo and his possible future here in Medina. He actually has not seen the Lady since he has been here and that might be a turning point for him for, She has a powerful Presence.”

“Yes, whenever I have had the privilege to speak to Lady Amethyst… which has been awhile, I have come away refreshed and enlightened. I don’t know how Nemo would react while in Her powerful Presence, whether he would be frightened or be overcome with guilt and shame,” commented Francis. “You know I have not personally spoken to the lady since before we set off on that long tour of the worlds, which has been over two years now! I probably need to make my own appointment to see Her. She may want to question me on how well I am progressing in my studies and how I feel about becoming a father. We are so fortunate to have such a Temple here in our own modest little village.”

“Indeed, we are,” replied Raphael. “Why don’t I have Master Polaño set up a couple of back-to-back appointments for the two of us and perhaps – if the Lady deems it appropriate – to hold a session with the two of us. How does that sound?”

Francis nodded and said, “I think it would be a wise move, Father, since I am now your heir or at least the heir of Grandfather and am being mentored by you and the Veyan physicians.”

“That reminds me of another topic, Francis,” replied Raphael. “It is time for you to be included in more of the decision-making for the Federation. At the very least, you should be included in any high-level discussions so you can give your input and opinions. And you will be able to personally speak to the leaders and planetary representatives allowing you and them to become acquainted well before you actually take full command as the Lord of the Pleiades. Does that sound reasonable?”

“More than reasonable, Father,” said Francis, “This step would mean I would be acting more like an apprentice or journeyman, learning my job alongside you and my other mentors. I might just sit in the room and listen to the discussions for a while until I get adjusted to being in the presence of other powerful men, but I don’t see a problem. I know I have my own ideas on what I would like to see happen in our Federation, on behalf of all the people – and I am sure you have your own ideas on the subject.”

“Indeed, I do, Francis – for one thing, I was not able to complete my project to the point where it would permanently affect the evolution of our people. Yet, by being one of the men who was able to halt the war in our space, the people now have time to slowly evolve if given the appropriate teachings from their priestesses and leaders on how to go about such a thing,” replied Raphael. “When I was in Alyona after being removed from The Golden Lion, Master Phillip Carete came up with an insightful comment about our people – that if we all focus on raising up our frequency levels, as individuals and as collectives, we will automatically remove ourselves from being vulnerable to future predations by low-frequency war-like peoples of any description. It took quite a lot provocation to get the enemy to even attack such planets like Medina and Maia and that only occurred after we foiled their attempt to steal the sentient crystalline technology of the Starship Project.”

“Those are interesting topics of discussion, Father. Perhaps you could bring them up to Master Zang and Master Tzulo so they could give you some insight on how to approach raising our frequency levels… how that would translate or be communicated to the everyday Pleiadian living and working on our very diverse Worlds,” commented Francis. He suddenly smiled and said, “You know, Father, we have strayed quite a ways from speculating on what to do about my birth father! Although that is an important matter to consider for the family, our people’s welfare and future far outweighs any personal concern I have about a man who turned his back on his own mate and children long before he actually committed the offenses that put him into prison.”

“Perhaps, Francis – if I have another interview with Nemo, you should be there, too. Let your father know just how you feel about being abandoned by him even as a child and how that kind of treatment affected your mother. I don’t think he has actually considered the repercussions of his choices had on those closest to him, which is a shame, as Nemo really needs to grasp how one’s actions impact more than just his own existence,” replied Raphael. “He has exhibited to us all just how self-centered and selfish he was with the manner in which he was obsessed in becoming a top commander rather than being a man, a mate, and a father. What is more important in life than being there for the ones you love?”

“Speaking of being there for the ones you love – I think Carlos has some news to share!” added Raphael as he noticed Carlos hurrying towards them from the house. “What is happening in there, Carlos? I’ve just been attempting to distract our prospective father, so he doesn’t get too alarmed with how long the birthing is taking…”

“Well, he doesn’t have to wait much longer, my lord,” replied Carlos a little breathlessly. It was clear he had run through the house to reach the gardens. It was a big house…

Yes, Carlos?”

“Master Francis… Cousin, you are now the father of a beautiful little boy. The ladies are just clearing up the room and freshening your mate up. You’ll be able to visit them in about a half hour if you can wait that long,” replied Carlos. He turned and started back to the house.

Raphael called out to his adopted cousin, “Wait, Carlos – we’ll come with you, too. I’ll need some refreshments and tea to take to Lady Ella after her ordeal. And you, Francis, will probably need some, too, once you settle down from all the excitement.”

As Francis and Raphael re-entered the family rooms, Mazzie came up and gave Francis a hug and said, “You’re a father, my lad; I am so proud of you and Lady Ella! You know this is a significant step to becoming the Lord of the Pleiades, with you starting your own family and securing the future of the Lordship for the VaCoupe Family.”

Raphael instructed Eduardo to get some tea and refreshments for Lady Ella and Francis so the couple would be able to have some private time…but not before he and Lorenna visited the new arrival. Only when Raphael and Francis reached Raphael’s suite, Lorenna wasn’t present, so they walked further and paused in the hall as Master Tzulo left the suite where Francis and Ella stayed. Raphael said, “Master Zang, how is Lady Ella and the baby? And have you seen Lady Lorenna?”

The small-statured Veyan smiled and replied, “We couldn’t keep Lady Lorenna from her daughter-in-law; she was in the room with Lady Ella during the entire birthing. She is still there admiring her new grandson. You two can go in now, my lord.”

Francis entered first and saw his beautiful mate resting, her long blonde hair damp from her recent exertions. He didn’t care, thinking she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. He whispered, “How are you, my love?”

“Tired, Francis – look at your son. Your mother is holding him,” replied Lady Ella. She sighed, and said, “I could use some tea; my mouth is parched. I screamed a little. It was painful, my lord.”

“Don’t apologize, Ella,” said Raphael. “You are safe. The baby is safe; that’s all that matters. Now, Lorenna – may I see our newest grandson?”

Lorenna smiled as she leaned over the little bundle she was holding and cooed, “Little Demetrius… your grandfather wants to see you.”

“Demetrius – Francis, you’re calling your son Demetrius?” asked Raphael as his eyes began to tear up. He missed his adopted father more than he realized but knew the soul of this child was not him.

Francis nodded, “In memory of Grandfather, for all that he did for me, for us, for our people, losing his life in nearly the last hours of the war in the Pleiades.”

“Very suitable, Francis, Ella,” replied Raphael, sniffing a little. He reached out to Lorenna, who passed him the child. He pulled the swaddling away from the child’s face. A round-faced, dark-haired little boy looked up into his grandfather’s eyes with a wide dark blue-eyed stare. Raphael grinned and said, “Yes, he is a VaCoupe male; the line continues, Lord Demetrius, Father, even though you are not here with us, now.”

“Father, can I see my son?” Francis peered over his stepfather’s arm at the child, while Raphael handed him the boy. “Oh, Ella – he’s beautiful! Now little Paulos will have someone else to play with!”

Raphael laughed. Then, he heard a discrete knock and opened the door of the suite. It was Eduardo Montoya, the BerWarian Eagle with some tea and refreshments for Francis and Ella. “Oh, good timing, Eduardo; please come and set down the tray on the table over there. Now, do you want to see the future of the VaCoupe family? Meet little Demetrius!”

“Oh, my lord, thank-you!” The Eagle carefully laid down the tray and then peeked over at the child and commented, “He is a beautiful boy, my lord, congratulations, Master Francis, Lady Ella! Now, I will let you finish your visit in private.” With that, the tall Eagle gave a salute and left the room.

Raphael pulled Lorenna to her feet and said, “I rather think it’s time we left, too, so Ella can rest, and you can enjoy her company and dote on your new son, Francis. Good evening, children! Come, Lorenna… we need to join the rest of the family for dinner and give them the news!”

As Raphael and Lorenna re-entered the family room, Raphael announced generally, “By now you probably all know Lady Ella has been successfully delivered of a strong healthy male child. Lorenna and I have been privileged to see the boy. I can say with some authority that he is a VaCoupe male, with dark-hair and his family’s dark blue eyes. Francis has begun his own family and in doing so has ensured that the family line continues into the future. And what’s more, Francis and Ella have named the child Demetrius, in honor of Lord Demetrius, grandfather to Francis and my adopted father. Now, that we have two children safely brought into the world, I will have arrangements made so that in a week or so, we can have both boys, our Paulos and little Demetrius, brought before Lady Amethyst to receive their blessings from our Divine Mother.”

The evening repast was filled with relief, joy, and sharing amongst the assorted relatives gathered there. Raphael’s great heart was certainly filled with joy and relief that he had taken the chance to ensure that his stepson would have a position to inherit when he was fully prepared. His latest discussion with Francis convinced him that the young man was a very different person than his emotionally unstable blood father, something Raphael knew would cheer the heart of his adopted father even as he recovered from his traumatic death between incarnations. Raphael sent his love to his departed foster father and felt his own heart center light up as the soul essence of Demetrius responded in kind.

Lady Lorenna looked at him with some concern when she overheard him sniff, a tear or two trailing down his pale cheek. She asked, “Are you all right, my love?”

Raphael nodded, “More than all right, my dear. I’m… just remembering Father. He is very pleased to have a great-grandchild…”

A week later, several members of the immediate family followed Raphael and Francis as they carried their babies to the Shemont to receive their blessings from the Shekinah. With Milo and Loki trailing behind them carrying baskets for the youngest members, Raphael and Francis entered one of the main side chapels of the great temple complex. Lady Amethyst was already standing at the head of the chapel, waiting for the entourage to enter and to be seated. The Lady signed the fathers to bring their children to the altar to receive their blessings directly from her. Raphael knew this was different from when Jychondria had received his blessings, but he obeyed the Lady and carried little Paulos up to the altar with Francis VaCoupe closely following his lead. As the crowd of participants hushed, the Lady stepped up to each of the fathers and gazed upon the babies. Then, Lady Amethyst poured out a tiny bit of sacred oil upon the head of little Demetrius and intoned a long blessing, which included:

Upon the head of this child, I pour out this sacred oil, as a sign that this young person will someday in a long distant future take up the leadership of our great Federation. Young Demetrius will revive his family and lead his people for many hundreds of years. And his uncle, young Paulos Dino Kantor-VaCoupe, will be standing at his side as guardian and support. I see much happiness returning to our worlds when word spreads that our Heir has become a father and the VaCoupe line continues, now and forever more…”

Then the Lady lapsed into a prayer, reaching her beringed fingers up towards the ceiling of the great chapel, and transforming (stepping down) the strong energies of the Divine essence of the Mother essence for all the people present. Raphael felt Paulos shift in his arms as the child felt and received the energies. He braced his own legs as he felt the energies descend upon his own body, shutting his eyes momentarily. Raphael saw the beautiful pink, gold, and white Light emanating from the Priestess’s hands and felt grateful that his little son was receiving this blessing.

At the end of the brief ceremony, the VaCoupe party emerged out into the late winter sunlight to the cheers of the gathered villagers, who were on hand to greet the latest additions to the ancient line of VaCoupes. Francis lifted up his son and showed him to the people and announced, “The lineage of our Family is now assured in the person of my little son, Demetrius Francom-Kadish VaCoupe!”

Raphael laughed and just said, “And I have yet another son to add to my already considerable family!”

Again, the villagers (many of whom were retainers and staff at the VaCoupe household) cheered, happy to acknowledge the temporary lord and head of VaCoupe Family, standing alongside his stepson and the future heir to the lordship of Lord Demetrius. Raphael and Francis gave the crowd a cheerful wave in return. Then, the family members made their way slowly through the small crowd (it was still a village) and back to the golden gate. Lorenna, Raphael, and several other members of the family settled onto benches inside the large gardens, just enjoying the late winter sunshine.

Soon it would be summer and hot outside, but now the air was pleasant. Raphael greeted Felipe who was seated nearby watching little Daniel, and the other small cousins playing on the patio tiles.

Daniel ran up when he noticed Raphael was present and asked to be held. Since his father was still holding Paulos, Milo came up and placed the baby into his basket and then settled on the ground guarding his young charge. Raphael grinned and explained to Felipe, “Milo took to Paulos the first time he saw him, just hours after his birth. Apparently, the little boy is yet another reincarnated Feline. I may assign Milo to be his permanent guardian at this rate.”

The great Feline glanced up and growled, “I would be honored to guard your son, my lord… if my brother, Loki, can guard the son of Master Francis, too.”

“Ah, that would be perfect, Milo,” replied Raphael, although he would miss the presence of the two great Feline Eagles when he would attend High Council in Alyona or go on trips, at least until the two boys were a bit older and strong enough to travel. Perhaps he would request the presence of two more Feline Eagles to take over the duties of the stalwart Loki and Milo. Commander Monteras was very talented in finding truly amazing guardsmen to protect Raphael and his family.

Lady Lorenna and Lady Ella were wandering around the garden, relishing the fact they were no longer weighted down by a heavily pregnant body. They were bending over smelling roses, pinching herbs, and sniffing at the strong scents and thoroughly enjoying the sensation of being nearly back to their normal weight and size. Lady Remilla on the other hand remained seated, with her attentive mate, Gareth, at her side, patting her hand.

Raphael took a deep breath, taking in the aromas of the garden, the fresh air (it had rained during the night) and the scent of flowers wafting in on the light breeze from the desert plains surrounding the village. Francis was still holding little Demetrius in his arms, while Daniel rested on his father’s lap. Raphael asked Daniel to give him his impression of the new baby.

Daniel glanced up at his father and grinned, as he replied, “Papa, brother… he was like Milo once.”

Raphael had to laugh and told Francis what his young son had just shared, “Daniel just told me that your son was also once a Feline, another of Daniel’s former brothers, which means he was one of my sons. I wonder how much he will remember of that life?”

“Well, Father, it would indicate that Paulos and Demetrius already share a soul mate connection and will probably stand together into the future. It is a good thing to know. Each of these children will have to start their education by attending Arconia and then the University Ship, in the traditional manner exercised by most VaCoupe children,” replied Francis. He paused to lean over a kiss the forehead of his napping child. “This is good to know. I wonder what Daniel will decide to do; whether or not he will follow in your footsteps and become a line communications officer in the future. Since he is so psychic, it would be a good way to utilize his gifts, while serving our people, at least until he matures… which will be quite a while from now.”

“Yes, he is still rather young, but I might sit down with Daniel someday this year and ask him what he dreams of doing. My older sons were pretty focused early on with their life plans. Perhaps that is something to work into the planning of a child, their life plan… to at least highlight the general direction even before they are birthed,” replied Raphael. Then he sighed, “I need to return next week to Alyona, for High Council. I know Commander Adrigus wants a full report on our visit to Alfaedus and I might have to start making arrangements for yet another tour, although I haven’t yet decided on what planet to visit. Perhaps you might have a suggestion, Francis? And are you planning to stay here with Lady Ella for at least a month while she adjusts to caring for little Demetrius – my, it feels a little odd to call the baby by my father’s name!”

Francis smiled and replied, “Ah, well… I always called him ‘Grandfather’. Maybe we can find a nickname for the lad when he is a bit older. Anyway, I would like to stay home with Lady Ella for at least this time, so I’ll go to the next High Council after the upcoming one. Your daughter, Remilla, might be having her child, too, during the next month or so. I’m sure she will want to have some close family around to see that she is well taken care of… so, I guess Gareth will be staying, too. Salaniel and Commander Monteras can accompany you to Alyona, along with most of your Eagles. Did I overhear you assigning Milo and Loki to watch our children?”

“Yes, I would like Milo and Loki to take to watching the babies, especially while they’re very young. Milo really took to Paulus and little Demetrius seems to be yet another reincarnated Feline. Little Daniel already recognized him,” replied Raphael. “So, now, I will have to request a few more Feline Eagles to take care of me! Still, I have the Montoya brothers, Paul, Vayin, Earl, and Garry. I doubt if my Eagles knew they were signing up to be babysitters!”

“Ella told me about Milo’s meeting little Paulus… just shortly after he was born? Something about Milo settling down with the boy’s basket in his lap and him purring? Yes, those great big men are sweethearts. We’re lucky to have them,” chuckled Francis.

Indeed. Father never really told me exactly why I’ve always been assigned to have Eagles guarding me, but they have become a part of the fabric of my life. I sincerely doubt I could do without them, now. Felipe has become the companion for little Daniel. Now, Milo and Loki will be guarding our young sons, Paulus, and Demetrius. If I get any more children, I’m going to run out of Eagles!” commented Raphael with a laugh. Then, he continued, “But we’ll let Lorenna rest before thinking about having any more children. I don’t really need any, after all since I now have seven. Lorenna and I have had a child together which further cements our relationship, and she has taken to little Daniel – who will be leaving anyway in a couple of years to attend at least his first schooling on Airus. Then, I will let the boy decide whether or not he wants to transfer to Arconia and join his brother Paulus and Demetrius.

Francis chuckled and replied, “We’re going to have enough sons between the three of us to start our own council! Father, you already had four sons and now, five.”

“I would subtract Ezekiel from that sum; I doubt I will ever see my second son again,” commented Raphael. “It’s just a feeling I have and the fact I have not heard any word from him since we met briefly on BerWare nearly two years ago now. Instead of worrying about Ezekiel, I would rather see my eldest son, Jychondria, and my grandson, Charles, in Jolf. I am sure that Lady Anna would be pleased to meet her latest grandson, as well, even if she isn’t a blood relation to you, Francis. So, let us plan to visit Jolf after I get home from Alyona. I think little Demetrius and Paulos should be strong enough by then to travel the short distance in the Golden Cat to Jolf… and I would like to see Lord Mathdis and Aiden. I don’t think Lady Ella has ever visited Jolf, yet.”

“That sounds wonderful, Father. I love Lady Anna and the Mathdis Family. I haven’t spent too much time in Jolf, either, so will jump at the opportunity to enjoy a short visit there while you are on Medina,” replied Francis, knowing how much his stepfather relished visits to his favorite village on Medina. He also knew just how much Raphael needed to feel the support of his friends there, including his cousin, Adario Kadish. “It will be good to see Master Adario and Lady Bettina, as well as Lady Rita. Why don’t you see if you can arrange for your son, Dante, to also take some leave from his ship and make this a family gathering so your sons can meet each other?”

“Oh, thank you, Francis – what a great idea!” enthused Raphael. “Jolf, my sons… all my sons, except – well, Ezekiel has made his choice to remain distant. Maybe Remilla will also be delivered by then. Let’s wait a little longer to see how her pregnancy is advancing or I will just consult with the Veyans to see how long it will take until the son of Gareth appears in our world…”

Lady Ella and Lorenna returned to the side of their mates and were greeted with tidings of the preliminary plans to travel to Jolf sometime in the next month or so, depending on how Lady Remilla’s pregnancy was progressing. So, perhaps there would be a family reunion there or…

After listening to the still tentative plans, Lorenna spoke up, “Well, since it is likely Remilla will be close to delivery, why don’t you invite the Mathdis clan, Jychondria and his family, as well as Adario and Lady Bettina to visit us here in Medina? I don’t think Remilla should travel now in her condition. And then also see that young Dante is granted some leave?”

Raphael chuckled, “Lorenna – the voice of reason and practicality! All right, I will speak to Lord Mathdis via comm so he can extend the invitations to all of our family located in Jolf. Spring festival is nearly upon us, and the entire village will be celebrating. It will be wonderful to have a gathering of our extended family and friends to join the party! So shall it be!”
