BOOK FOUR: CHAPTER 17 – Morovian Encounters

CHAPTER 17 – Morovian Encounters

BOOK FOUR

The following day at breakfast, both Salaniel and Roxanee were blushing as they ventured occasional glances at each other across the low table.  A proud father quietly signed Raphael: She accepted, my lord!

Raphael nodded and went on eating his breakfast. He had no wish to further stress or embarrass his sensitive aide any more than he already was.

Previously, Chief Ramirez had expressed his desire to drive the party around PoLiafee a bit more and then in the next day or so to venture out onto the surrounding desert regions with one of his desert hovercraft. The vessel could hold significant load of cargo or passengers depending on the intended use. By utilizing the hovercraft, the chieftain would be able to take his visitors into areas inaccessible to the larger starship, The Golden Cat. Raphael did offer to take Ramirez around his planet in the Cat at some point during their visit, but the chieftain politely insisted in first driving his visitors around himself. He wanted to take them to some of the outlying oases that either man might remember from their interrupted childhoods. However, first, Raphael was told by Chief Ramirez that Lady Beatrice wanted them to stop by the Temple of Post Ton while they were visiting.

After morning meditation at the Temple of Post Ton, Raphael met with Lady Beatrice, High Priestess for the Temple. The priestess also surprised Raphael and his party by presenting them to Lady Tina and Lady Nina VaCoupe. These two women were the now fully grown daughters of Lord Demetrius and Lady Anna, who had completed their senior classes at the temple.

As Master Francis, Commander Monteras, Commander DeAires watched, the two ladies approached Raphael and curtsied, in honor of their guest, the acting Regent of the Federation. Lady Tina came up to Raphael and extended her hand to be kissed, “Dear Brother, it is lovely to see that you are finally visiting Morova. It has been a long time since you’ve been here?”

“Yes, Lady Tina… it has been decades for me. Chief Ramirez here has been taking us on a tour of the city. He wants to take us out into the desert regions tomorrow. I am enjoying seeing the life and laughter of the people here returning,” replied Raphael, as he gazed upon his adopted sister and her identical twin. Both priestesses were tall and slender, white blondes with the dark blue VaCoupe eyes, lined with violet tones. Each woman had the delicate features of their mother, Lady Anna, with slightly longer faces with straight noses, high cheekbones, and firm chins. He smiled and continued with a question, “Do you two ladies find work here satisfying?”

Lady Nina tilted her head as she gazed upon her older adopted brother with his nearly white blonde hair, blue green eyes, and open face. “Well, Brother… if I can call you that, although we do not share any blood, I do long to travel a bit. I must get that from our father, Lord Demetrius. And now, Brother, we understand from Lady Beatrice and Chief Ramirez, that you have assumed the regency on behalf our mutual nephew… now your stepson, Master Francis VaCoupe?”

“That is so, my lady,” replied Raphael with a simple nod of his head. “I am still rather new at the job and still learning my way forward. I will say that my new mate, Lady Lorenna Dino, has proven very helpful in assisting me in refining my approach, manner of dress, and address. If I may be very frank with you both, I never expected to discover myself in such a position as I am today. And I am certain that Lord Demetrius, my adopted father, did not have any idea that the young orphan he once took into his heart would succeed him, if only for a short time until his heir, Master Francis, is fully prepared to take on the role of Lord of the Pleiades. I do not wish to carry this burden any longer than need be.”

“Have you met many of the rulers of our Worlds, then, my lord?” asked Lady Tina, curiously.

Certainly, my lady; as Regent, I am obligated to attend the monthly High Council and an assortment of smaller council meetings, along with meeting and speaking to various leaders and representatives. Prior to my ascension to the regency, I led a party on a long tour of several of the primary worlds. I was intent on introducing my then nephew, Master Francis, to some of the different cultures we have within the Pleiades. Now, Frances, is here in effect functioning as an apprentice learning his craft, with the assistance of many fine men and women. He should be well prepared before too many years pass by. I hope to hand over the baton of power to him after he passes his 40th appearance day,” replied Raphael, looking over at his blushing stepson.

Francis spoke up and said, “It is wonderful to see you, Aunt Tina, and Aunt Nina. My grandmother, Lady Anna, would be very pleased if you two came for a visit to Medina someday. You may know that Lady Anna mated with Lord Ricardo Mathdis about a year after Grandfather’s death. She has also returned to her work as High Priestess in Jolf and continues to support Lord Ricardo as his Lady. Since my cousin, Jychondria and his family live there, as well as Raphael’s cousin, Adario Kadish and Lady Bettina, both Raphael and I will be making more excursions to see the Mathdis Family and our friends who live in Jolf.”

Tina and Nina looked at each other and smiled. Tina replied, “Perhaps it is time for the two of us to return home to Medina for a family holiday. We both know it would be much changed without Father present, but it would be good to see Lady Anna, and the rest of the family. Thank you for the invitation, Raphael, Francis, if this was what you were intending?”

“Certainly, I would let Lady Anna and Uncle Raimundo know that you were considering on joining us for a family visit. I might also include inviting a few friends from Maia, so Lady Lorenna will be able to see some of her family, as well,” replied Raphael with a smile.

Lady Tina gave her adopted brother an understanding look. She had heard rumors of his matchmaking skills, with several of her nieces and nephews recently having been successfully mated. She smiled and said, “Does one of your Maian friends require a mate, my lord? Would that friend happen to be Lord Adamos who was recently created Lord of Maia?”

Raphael laughed and replied, “Am I so transparent, my lady? Yes, my friend and cousin, Lord Adamos, is in need of a well-trained lady to be his mate. He is new to his job, still learning from his uncle, Lord Efrem. Adamos is a fine, sweet-tempered individual with golden hair and a great laugh. He can be quite serious at times and playful in others. Our visit in Milan was a bit strained as some individuals had become implanted with enemy devices, including one of the younger brothers of Lord Robertio Dino himself. Hopefully, things are returning to some semblance of order now that the city has been under military lockdown for a couple of months. It was quite distressing to witness such a beautiful city threatened from within long after the ending of the wars here in the Pleiades. It just reinforced my belief that there is still much to do in healing our people and worlds of the aftereffects of the stresses of war.”

“And so, Lord Adamos is looking for a likely mate who can work alongside him or at least lend her moral support as he works to heal his city and Planet?” queried Lady Tina.

Just so, my Lady,” replied Raphael with a slight bow.  “Now, could we have a tour of the Temple since meditation has completed for this morning?”

Lady Beatrice stood up and announced, “That is a lovely idea, my lord; come this way and see where once your own mother served when you were a child.”

The great Temple had several chapels and one large sanctuary. The latter gathering room did not have any seats. It was a large open space with a stone building, the walls built up, plastered, and pierced with long oval windows covered with stained glass. An altar was set up at the head of the Temple where the high priestess presided. Upon the altar were several large crystals, a crystal bowl for water, several beeswax candles, and a couple vases filled with the latest offerings, long stemmed roses and lavender that filled the temple with their sweet scent. As he looked up at the arched and buttressed ceilings, Raphael recalled all the other temples he had visited during the course of his travels. He found each one so different in feel and appearance. This temple was very ancient, and its stone floors were shiny and worn from the passage of many feet.

The party toured the building, passing through several small chapels to reach a long gallery that opened up on a walled interior garden. Raphael walked companionably next to Lady Tina, who appeared to be the most amiable of the twins, willing to chat about light subjects and ask questions about the various things that Francis and Raphael had seen on their travels. She also questioned her nephew (she was actually slightly younger than Francis) about the subjects he was studying in preparation to eventually taking on the lordship.

Francis grinned, “Both my instructors keep Gareth and I extremely busy when we’re home, either in Alyona or Medina. Being on a tour like this is a vacation for me, Aunt Tina.”

“Gareth? Isn’t he one of your Eagles, Lord Raphael?” asked Lady Nina.

Francis nodded, “Yes, Aunt Nina – when we visited Milan, we found out that Gareth’s father was related to the Dinos. Actually, he is my first cousin through my mother, since she is the daughter of Lord Robertio Dino, who was killed rather recently along with his heir, Lord Daylen… which is why Uncle Adamos is now Lord Dino. Gareth was officially adopted by Lord Efrem and just a little while ago was mated to my Uncle’s youngest daughter. You do know that Lord Raphael is adopted, Aunt?”

“Of course, we do, Francis. Both Tina and I remember the first time we met Lord Raphael. I think he had flown one of his golden ships to Medina and stopped in for a chat with Father,” replied Lady Tina. “We wondered about him since he didn’t look at all like Father or Mother or anyone else in the family.”

“Yes, I’ve always managed to elicit comments and questions from visitors who notice I do not look anything like a VaCoupe male,” chuckled Raphael.

The tour group had returned back to the portico at the front of the Temple. People were already beginning to enter the temple in preparation for another meditation, so Lady Beatrice bid her guests farewell. The Ladies Tina and Nina promised to make an effort to attend the next Howling in Medina. Raphael and Francis waved to their relatives as the men began their walk back to the Ramirez house, the house that Raphael was born in nearly a century prior.

Chief Ramirez said, “Lord Raphael, you seem to find relatives of yours all over the Federation? I have known that your sisters were serving in the Temple but have never spoken to them before.”

Raphael laughed, “I certainly don’t have relatives in places like Vey and Krey, but I have met or encountered relatives on several planets from an assortment of lifetimes… as you witnessed in the meeting with the remnants of the DeAires and Monteras families yesterday. On our tour, I discovered that I have relatives on Serana, Maia, and Airus, just from this life. Of course, I share the Morovian connections with my Aides, Monteras and DeAires, from my previous life as a young Morovian.”

Francis took him by the arm and said, “Well, Father, we’re glad you’re here with us now. If it were not for you being here with us, Father, we might still be deep in the midst of a war. We are all grateful that you are now acting as a guide for us all. I know that I am grateful for your presence in my life, for had you not taken on the burden of being regent, it might have been a long time before I took on the office of Lord of the Pleiades.”

Chief Ramirez was pleased to see his new friend honored by his nephew/son. “You see, my lord, the people love you, even those who are within your own family… the new family that you yourself has created. Now, let us return to the house to have some tea and refreshments during the heat of mid-day. It may not be as hot as BerWare or your own Medina; still, it is hot here in Morova for those who are not used to the dry heat. It is very wise to continue to wear your uniforms, as the garments aid in keeping your body temperature at an even level despite the heat. However, with the sun beating down on your head, it is still easy enough to become overcome with a bit of heat illness.” Raphael was grateful to hear that they were going to rest for a while in the cool interior of the thick walls of his own birth house. When the party regained the courtyard, they were greeted by Mathidia, the mate of Chief Ramirez. She led the men into the house. The children were nowhere to be seen. Mathidia let the men know that the boys and the younger daughters were at school, while Roxanee was up in her room busily working on one of her beading projects. Raphael was certain that the careful Morovian parents were making sure that the soon to be affianced couple were kept apart if neither parent was available. Mathidia led the men into the rose garden behind the house, a walled garden lined with climbing roses and edged in lavender and other fragrant herbs. There were also several large pots filled to overflowing with easily grown vegetables and herbs.

As the men and their hosts settled on chairs and benches, Matteo the cook made a brief appearance to notify the mistress of the house that he would be going to the local market to pick up some fresh produce and other dietary staples. Salaniel, Master Mei Li, and Monteras expressed an interest in accompanying Matteo, so Raphael, Francis, and their Eagles settled down for a nice cup of tea and refreshments with Chief Ramirez and his mate, Mistress Mathidia.

Raphael sipped some of the fragrant tea and then asked the question, “Chief Ramirez – Juan – you signed me this morning that your daughter, Roxanee, is willing to mate my ‘son’ Salaniel. Is this so?”

“Indeed, my lord. When asked, Roxanee immediately replied in the affirmative. She thought Salaniel to be sweet and sensitive, yet hard-working and reliable. She is aware that you are an excellent judge of character and value Salaniel’s presence in your life. Roxanee knows that she will be required to follow Salaniel wherever he goes while in your service, but for her, that will mean the opportunity to travel beyond Morova and to meet a variety of people,” replied Ramirez.

Mathidia commented, “Roxanee has always been inquisitive. With this new opportunity, she will potentially be able to meet persons from all over the Federation, something that is not likely to occur if she remains on Morova. You did mention to Juan that your household travels with you when you go to Alyona, my lord?”

“Indeed, Mistress. My mate, my second daughter, and Francis’ lady, Lady Ella, all travel with us, as does Lady Arla, who is the mother of Master Gareth, as well as a High Priestess. Roxanee will be well-escorted at all times and guarded by Eagles when on Alyona. We typically stay at Alyona Castle for about 10 days and then return home to Medina, which is another desert planet, although quite different than Morova in that we have freshwater seas,” replied Raphael. “The VaCoupe household in the village of Medina is quite a comfortable place, with large gardens and many rooms. While we are at home, we all have jobs around the house. I have done gardening in the past, although, now with my present duties, I do not have as much time to spend in the garden. Still, I enjoy some time outside to play with my youngest son… and anticipate doing the same with the newest child who should be arriving in about six months now.”

“Another child, my lord?” marveled Mistress Mathidia. “This will be your seventh, then?”

“Yes,” replied Raphael, “I have four sons and two daughters, as well as three foster children. All but the last son are now all grown, although my second daughter mated as she is with the first cousin of Francis here, Gareth, is now living with us.”

“Then, Roxanee will never do without company? That is good. While she is a very hardworking young woman, she loves to spend some time with company,” commented Mathidia with a smile. She paused and looked her mate, then asked, “When and where were you thinking of holding the mating ceremony, my lord? Medina is very far from here and I… we have other children to take care of at home.”

“Well, just today, I invited my adopted sisters, the Ladies Tina and Nina VaCoupe, to return home for the next Howling. Your daughter could accompany them to Medina. You are welcome, too, Chief Ramirez, to be there to bless your daughter’s union with Commander Salaniel. Then, we can arrange to have the couple visit you here on Morova sometime later,” suggested Raphael.

I could accompany the priestesses, as well, on their journey, as they would probably be utilizing a couple of shuttles to get to Medina. I know it’s a long trip, compared to traveling in your golden ship, my lord,” remarked Ramirez.

Raphael grinned, “Yes, my friend; now that I know the Golden Cat can portal travel our trips are mere minutes whereas the first time, I traveled from Alyona to Medina it took three whole days! Of course, you could travel with your daughter to Alyona during High Council and then come home with us on the Golden Cat when we go to Medina. It would be a longer stay, but would give you an opportunity to see Medina, visit with members of my immediate and extended family and see where your daughter and Salaniel will be housed. What say you?”

“An opportunity to fly in the Golden Cat? I know Roxanee would be quite thrilled, my lord,” replied Ramirez. “Let Mathidia and I discuss the various possible arrangements in private and we will get back to you, later. Now, gentlemen – oh, I hear voices; Matteo and his companions must be returning from the market!”

The men who had accompanied Matteo were all burdened down with large baskets filled with fruit and vegetables. Matteo grinned, “My lord, I was fortunate to have helpers today. Feeding your Eagles is quite an undertaking!”

Raphael chuckled, “Yes, but they are quite worth it, Matteo! Aren’t you, men?” The Eagles laughed in response.

Salaniel, Monteras, and Master Mei Li settled down on benches in the garden after taking their baskets to the kitchen and larder. Master Mei Li commented, “We observed a very busy market today, my lord; Matteo took us to a new section where there was only produce, grains, beans, and spices. There were some beautiful baskets for carrying items; we brought back the produce in a few of them. I didn’t think I would see such a variety of produce and fruit available on a desert Planet. Chief Ramirez, do your people have orchards on the Planet?”

“Not typically, Master Zang,” replied Ramirez. “Some of the oases do support small groves of date palms and some small orchards. Occasionally in some of the towns, people raise citrus fruit, pomegranates, and similar fruits, but only in their home gardens. Much of the fruit we see in the markets comes from Vey… your own home world, sir.”

Raphael was curious about the aftereffects of the war on the formerly nomadic culture of Morova. He asked, “I am aware that the vulnerability of family units traveling through the desert led to many attacks being made on them. Has this issue changed the way people are living on Morova outside of the cities and towns? As our ship circled the planet, there appeared to be many smaller settlements scattered here and there.”

Chief Ramirez nodded, “Yes, my lord, it has. The various tribes and family units started settling down at the oases, so they could have access to water and be more easily monitored by the Command from above. We are aware of the efforts of the Command to clean up the dark network and contributed to it where we could without endangering our children and womenfolk. By keeping to more limited territories, the family members and tribal leaders could more easily monitor for the presence of unwanted strangers or troublemakers. We also learned to report such persons to either our own priestesses or directly to our contacts with the covert command forces who used native Morovians to act as spies among the dark network. Your own Commander Monteras knows of what I speak, my lord. Still… this is not a discussion I would prefer to have around my mate and children.”

Master Mei Li spoke up, “Chief Ramirez, your own name suggests that you are a leader of a tribe or group of Morovians. Is the office you hold similar to that of a tribal BerWarian, who lives with his people and family group? If so, where is the rest of your family now?”

Their host smiled and replied, “I am now more of an administrator than a patriarch, my friends. My extended family is stationed at several of the larger oases where we have warehouses for gathering and distributing goods from Morova and other planets. I am the leading member of the loosely knit trade association, like what your father worked with long ago, my lord. I was chosen to represent my people and our traders at High Council as I am now one of the wealthiest individuals and have a large network of traders who work under me. I would like to take your party on a tour of some of our warehouses if you have the time during this or future visits.” Ramirez turned to Raphael and asked, “You are going to be coming back to Morova, my lord, now that you have seen that we are recovering from the effects of war and the streets are now safe for children, women, and visitors alike?”

Raphael nodded, replying, “Yes, Juan – I… we will be back. After all, I now know that I have living family members here. I would like to be able to visit them in the future. Of course, I also have duties to attend to, but will make the time to visit those places where my extended family members live, whether here, Maia, Airus or Serana.”

Mathidia smiled and commented, “Lady Beatrice requested my presence after meditation this morning. She is considering reinstating the Festival celebrations we used to hold… well, haven’t held in a very long time. During much of the war, especially when Morova was subject to numerous attacks, it wasn’t safe to hold large-scale public celebrations, especially ones that would draw many children.”

“What do the celebrations entail… or should I say, how was Festival celebrated before the war, Mistress Ramirez,” politely inquired Francis, who was curious to learn about any customs and cultural practices on the Worlds which someday he would oversee as the Lord of the Pleiades.

Well, for one thing, a parade wound through the marketplace until reaching the great Temple. There, the merrymakers would go inside into a large auditorium with seating for observers and family members. Then, the members of the parade would show off their costumes, as well as give exhibitions of song and dancing. Older members of our city remember the times before the war severely impacted our people, my lord, and want to see the old customs resumed now that it is safer to do so. We are, if you may have noticed, a people who love to sing, dance, and play. There were also always prizes given out for the best and most outrageous costumes. We have many talented craftspeople here on Morova, my lord,” replied Mathidia.

Commander Monteras commented, “My grandmother related to me tales of Festival when I was just a boy, before I decided to leave Morova and join the Command. It would be wonderful to start the Festival celebrations up again, especially now since the wars have left the Pleiades. Grandmother always said it was to celebrate our devotion to Source and to give the children something to look forward to – as they have a day off of school and could help in making their own costumes.”

“That sounds like a wonderful idea, Juan, Mistress Ramirez,” replied Raphael. Personally, he didn’t have any pleasant remembrances of former Festival days on Morova, but he wasn’t going to speak about his own unfortunate experiences in this setting. His former Morovian father did occasionally share some memories of the ‘good-old- days’, tales handed down by his grandparents to his father and mother. Anor would tell the children stories of the great Festivals held in PoLiafee and other towns, celebrations that would draw many of the nomadic families to set up camp near the cities so they could also participate. By the time he was birthed into Morova, the war had destroyed many of the former occupations and festivals, although spiritual meditations were still held in each of the temples, especially the great Temple of Post Ton in PoLiafee.

Upon finishing her tea, Mathidia rose up and curtsied to her visitors, Lord Raphael, and Francis, announcing, “It’s time for me to go assist Matteo with the meal. There is a lot of food preparation that still needs to be done today.”

“Thank you for the tea and refreshments, my lady,” replied Master Mei Li. “I find it most interesting to visit each of the Worlds and observe the practices of the people. It gives me more ideas on what to present to Master Francis and his cousin, Master Gareth, to prepare them for leadership roles in the future.”

Gareth and Francis looked at each other and grinned. Master Mei Li was a hard taskmaster, but an extremely wise and fair individual. The young men knew they could learn much from their teacher’s experience.

Ramirez looked around at his visitor’s and announced, “And I need to visit my warehouses here in the city so I can determine what we need to stock up on for future market days and what we need to purchase from other worlds for our customers. Lord Raphael, Francis… would you and your people like to accompany me for a short tour of our facilities?”

Raphael nodded, for although he dreaded inwardly what he might remember, he knew he had to walk through places where some of the worst memories of his childhood were made. For him it would be a test to see if he had, indeed, cleared himself of the old trauma and pain. “Yes, Juan… Chief Ramirez – we will accompany you. I have… personal reasons for visiting that part of the city. If appropriate, I may share some things that I would not want to say here in the midst of your family home.”

Chief Ramirez knew what Raphael dreaded, at least in part. He had personally seen the remnants of what was found in the basements of the houses belonging to many of the former leading families within PoLiafee who had been a part of the dark human trafficking network, as well as what was discovered hidden away within some of the abandoned warehouses. He had seen the cages and other things, sights of which he had never shared with his mate or children. Still, he was glad that he could offer Raphael an opportunity to continue on with his healing

journey, that this leader of the Federation would finally be able to set aside his pain and better be able to serve all of the people. Ramirez intuitively understood that the primary source of Raphael’s love for the common people stemmed from the experiences he had suffered while a child on Morova. It was time for the healing to be done.

Then, let us go. We will take a few viscars as it is quite a walk. The city is growing now that it is safe for families to live in it again!” replied Ramirez as he stood up. “I will change my shoes into soft boots, if you would kindly wait for a few minutes.”

The chieftain gave a short bow and passed into the house, leaving his guests behind. A mystified Francis looked over at Raphael and commented, “What was Chief Ramirez hinting at when he mentioned the warehouses, Father?”

Raphael grimaced as he glanced over to Monteras and then replied, “Francis – many of the older warehouses were utilized in the slave trade, as distribution centers for holding and shipping on captured children and occasionally adults who had been taken in raids. There were… hmmm, rooms used for torture or abuse. When I was kidnapped as an adult, I was taken to just such a place, held in a cell, and abused before being rescued by Monteras and his Eagles. I am sure that Ramirez is quite aware of what happened in such places and is allowing me the opportunity to see first-hand that the dark network has been completely removed from the city.”

Monteras nodded and commented, “It is as Raphael has stated. He was being held as a child in one such warehouse when I first met him in this life. He was rescued about a month later, but unfortunately, his father succeeded in having him and his mother kidnapped a couple of months later. So, Raphael has some deeply held memories to overcome by even visiting these places. We knew this would potentially be a factor in coming to Morova at all, yet I know my friend wants to heal as much as possible in this life. As ever, he displays his innate courage as an example to all of us.”

As Chief Ramirez appeared at the doorway once again, he glanced around at the visitors, noting the alert appearance of the Eagles as they stood up, the thoughtful expression on Master Mei Li’s face, as well as the rather set expressions on the faces of Raphael and Monteras…

Relax, gentlemen – whatever was in place in these warehouses has largely been removed and destroyed. They are now being used as storehouses for goods obtained across the multiverse – at least those parts where our trading ships can travel with some safety,” stated Ramirez in a comforting tone. He noted that his comment did little to diminish the tension he could sense emanating from some of his visitors, so shrugging his shoulders, he continued, “Well, are you ready? My lord, perhaps a couple of your Eagles could drive the viscars so I can speak to you and describe what we are seeing while we travel?”

“Certainly, Chief Ramirez; Milo and Loki, could you pilot the second and third viscars?” asked Raphael. The great Feline Eagles nodded and strode out into the courtyard at the head of the house, climbing into the waiting machines. Raphael was reminded of the time when he had first been taken to this particular house by Eagle Ezekiel. Certainly, he had changed since then.

The little convoy of three viscars wound their way through the sprawling city until arriving at the southeastern edge of the residential areas. Warehouses loomed up next to flat sandy lots where desert hovercraft or even small trading ships could safely land to load and unload their goods. For a long moment, Raphael closed his eyes sensing the land and buildings, testing the frequencies present. He could not detect anything that was out-of-place and began to relax. He sent Monteras who was in the second viscar a subtle sign, who, in turn, sent it on to the hyperalert Eagles seated in the second and third viscars, namely Eduardo, Giorgio, Earl and Garry. Salaniel and Gareth looked at each other and nodded. Meanwhile, Chief Ramirez was silently admiring the alertness of the escorts of Raphael and Francis. Even if Morova had finally been retamed, there were other worlds that might present problems if and when the new regent and heir visited them.

Master Mei Li was also analyzing and scanning Raphael to see how he was handling merely being in PoLiafee, the site where many traumatic events of his young life had played out. The little Veyan master smiled, Raphael was doing quite well from what the physician could tell from a simple scan. Raphael glanced back and waved to Mei Li, letting him knew that he had felt the scan, assuring his physician of his good spirits.

Ramirez was driving the first viscar and set the vehicle down outside the entrance to one large warehouse. He gave a shout and climbed out of the viscar as the great double doors were being opened by some of his staff who were busy working on packing a shipment. Ramirez waved the visitors on to follow him inside. As the workers inside crowded forward in greeting, he commented loudly, “Cousins, I would like you to meet Lord Raphael, newly created Regent of the Pleiades and his stepson, Francis VaCoupe, who is the Heir to the Lordship of Lord Demetrius. His companions include Gareth Dino, Commander Monteras and Commander DeAires, both Morovians, as well as Lord Raphael’s personal physician, Master Mei Li Zang, and his Eagle escort. I want you to welcome our visitors with open arms as I give them a short-guided tour of our facility here.”

As the visitors climbed out of the viscars, Gareth approached the double doors giving entrance to the warehouse and suddenly halted. As he did, he reached out to stop Raphael from entering the building, his voice harsh as he whispered, “My lord – do you not remember this place?”

Raphael stopped abruptly and felt into the resonance of the building. Although he had not seen the warehouse to which he had been brought as a captive in the daylight – he had fainted before being removed from it… he recognized its frequency and looked over to Ramirez with some puzzlement in his eyes, “When did your family obtain ownership of this… building, Chief Ramirez?”

“Oh, my lord – was this where you were brought? I am so sorry! I bought the building after its owners were rounded up during the clearances of the dark network. It is roomy and quite suitable for the needs of our family business, as you can see… if you are willing to enter. My cousins work here every day, my lord. Everything that was here… before… has been removed and the building cleansed by some of our local priestesses. I would not work in such a place had it not been done before, knowing what took place here before during the dark years of the war and enemy occupation of some areas of this planet,” replied Ramirez. He was proud of his family’s work and sorry to have brought up a reminder of painful experience for Lord Raphael.

Raphael nodded and replied to Gareth, whom he understood was just attempting to protect him from potentially experiencing one of his spells and said, “I am all right, Gareth. Thank you for your concern.” Then, turning back to Ramirez remarked, “Yes, I was brought here before in more difficult circumstances, my friend – I know you meant no harm bringing us here. Now, let me go inside and see for myself the changes your people have made to the place…”

The remainder of the visit to the warehouse went well, especially after Milo and Loki had taken upon themselves to search through the premises before allowing Raphael and Francis to enter. The cousins of Ramirez were quite surprised and a little nervous as the massive Felines surveyed the interior of the building and plainly showed their relief when the report came back to Monteras that the building was clear of all signs of enemy occupation. Raphael finally entered and looked around noticing the great bales of textiles. Up until that moment, he did not know what kinds of goods Ramirez specialized in, if anything, so he asked, “Are you a dealer in textiles, Juan? My former father, Anor… Salaniel, here, was one also…”

Ramirez looked surprised yet again and pleased to have something in common with Raphael albeit separated by a different lifetime. He replied, “I remember – Anor was very talented. Were you old enough to begin training under him, my lord… before?”

“Barely. I was six when the attack came and lost most of my extended family within minutes of the attack,” replied Raphael, carefully. “Still, I was the sort of child who absorbed everything, so I did learn quite a bit despite the fact I was considered too young to be properly instructed.”

“Ah – well, we obtain these textiles from all over the Federation, but are always looking for more sources,” replied Ramirez.

Have you checked out Serana, Juan?” When Ramirez shook his head, Raphael grinned and said, “Well, then – you do know I took a party to Serana as part of our tour of the seven primary worlds. When on Serana, we visited three different continents of that very large Planet. On the continent of Maraba, especially, there is a gentleman whose family proved to be excellent growers and weavers of beautiful textiles, ranging from fine cottons and linens to excellent silks. Robertio de Janiurus would be your contact person there. He is a very hospitable man with a wonderful hard-working family. I actually took some of the textiles that he gave us as a gift to my sister Claudine… before she was removed from her office…”

“Ah, yes, so much has changed for you in a short period, my lord. Thank you for giving me the name of a possible contact on Serana. I have yet to visit that particular world. We will see what we can arrange in the future and perhaps I can contact some other representatives from Serana when I attend High Council and then make arrangements for an official visit to see what is available,” replied Ramirez, already formulating plans for future contacts. He was eager to expand the family business and to create strong relationships with the residents of other worlds across the star cluster of the Pleiades, the Mana Hiri, Daughters of the Mother. Ramirez knew with these travels and contacts; his family would continue to prosper in the days to come by doing so.

Raphael smiled knowing that he had inadvertently created the beginnings of yet another skein of cooperation between the worlds, which would further strengthen the relationships between the very diverse peoples. Francis would be inheriting a far healthier Federation that what his grandfather Demetrius had had to deal with during the long wars.

While touring the large warehouse, Raphael noticed that all of the workers were male. He asked, “Do these men have families, Juan? If so, where are they housed?”

“They live in the city… most of them. A few of the families prefer to abide in nearby oases, my lord, being unwilling to give up the freedoms of desert-living. Their wives and daughters are mostly engaged in doing beading work. Like my Roxanee, we have many talented beaders in the family, and use many of the textiles we have obtained on other worlds for the raw materials. The ladies cut out the patterns, sew the garments and then set about decorating them. Some of our males also bead, but primarily on leather sandals, as well as designing intricate necklaces and bracelets for wear by males on our planet. I can show you some examples of our handiwork if you will come this way, my lord?” Chief Ramirez gestured towards a small separate room. Raphael recognized it as being the ‘office’ where his once guards had been stationed during their breaks, but he followed the chieftain inside without issue, although Commander Monteras was careful to attend him closely.

Hanging on a nearby rack was an assortment of beautiful necklaces and bracelets, designed to be worn by both male or females (the latter ones slightly smaller in size). There were also several examples of highly beaded indoor boots and sandals, as well as other accessories and beaded shawls for the ladies. The craftsmanship was gorgeous. Raphael respectfully asked if he could purchase a few of the women’s jewelry pieces so he could gift some of the ladies of his family with a lovely piece each.

Ramirez grinned and replied, “Only if I can gift five of your ladies with pieces that I choose myself. I have been making jewelry since I was a boy, my lord!”

Raphael was stunned by the generosity of the chieftain, “Well, then, I will purchase some pieces… bracelets for the menfolk…”

“That is quite agreeable, my lord,” replied Ramirez with the voice of a confidant artisan. He was well-aware that if men of Raphael’s family wore such pieces, they would be remarked upon. Ramirez could see himself bringing some of his more portable wares to some of the High Council meetings, at least during the refreshment periods. The canny chieftain knew that this new regent was intending on rebuilding trading ties and intra-planetary cooperation between all of the Worlds of the Federation. He was also excited about the possibility of discovering a new source of textiles on Serana. He admired the Seranian people, at least the ones he had met thus far during his short time representing the Morovian people at Council.

After much negotiation and dickering… more for the pleasure of it than any necessity, the two men agreed upon what pieces Raphael would take home as presents. Ramirez was quite pleased to see that Raphael had a well-developed sense of beauty and refinement despite his insistence on simplicity in his own manner of dress. The chieftain nodded and announced, “Well, now that we have agreed on the jewelry, would you like to look at some of our finished textiles, my lord, Master Francis… Master Gareth?”

Raphael suddenly got an amused expression on his face and commented, “Both Gareth and I are having to learn how to dress better now that our mutual stations in life have changed greatly. Do you have any embroidered and beaded robes that might impress the ladies?”

“For you or the ladies, my lord?” replied Ramirez, who was enjoying himself now that his visitors had moved in acceptance of the warehouse now being a place of peaceful commerce, cleared of any reminders of dark times.

Raphael looked over at Francis and Gareth, “Gentlemen? Do you think your ladies would enjoy some beautifully beaded Morovian robes and gowns, or perhaps a delightful shawl? I think I would like to get a shawl for Mazzie. She is my adopted great grandmother who has acted as a mother figure for me since I was a boy. I’ll look at some of the others for Lorenna, Remmie, and Lady Anna. Francis? Gareth?”

It was a couple of hours later that the party re-emerged from the warehouse and climbed into the viscars. Ramirez was very satisfied with his introduction of Raphael and Francis with the new realities of Morova, the new peaceful Morova. He remarked, “I will have my cousins bring the goods you all chose back to our house, so we do not have to cart them around while we continue on our little tour. Is that agreeable with you, my lord?”

Raphael nodded, “Yes, thank you! I knew the workmanship of the Morovian people was superb, but to be immersed in so much was a bit overwhelming! It does seem to be cooling down some. Where are we going now, Ramirez?”

“Out into the desert, my lord. Some of my cousins still insist in living in the nearby oases. Currently, they are still living in their tents complete with their animals nearby, but plans are in place to build sturdy houses with one or two stories below the surface for cooling and storage. The houses will be similar to what you see in the city, adobe, or sandstone construction, with arches and wooden beams – we have to import the wood from Krey or Vey as we do not have forests on Morova. There will be smaller warehouses and outbuildings associated with each of the family compounds. Our families on Morova are large. Although most families lost members during the wars, since many generations grew up during them, I estimate the population will be normalized in about two generations. I know my mate and I intend to bring more wonderful children into the world now that everything is improving for our people,” replied a proud and happy chieftain.

Once outside, Ramirez noticed the sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon. He turned to Raphael and apologized, “Oh, my lord; I lost track of the time. We should return to the house for supper or Matteo and Mathidia would be upset. Perhaps tomorrow we can go out into the desert?”

“Certainly, Ramirez,” replied Raphael, who was beginning to tire. “Perhaps I should take a nap before the meal starts. It’s the heat…”

Immediately, Monteras and Salaniel inquired if Raphael was getting ill. He patiently shook his head and replied, “No, some tea and light refreshments would help immensely. I rather think Morova is hotter than BerWare and Medina!”

Ramirez nodded, “Yes, my lord; if you are not used to it, the heat can catch you out. We will go into the desert very early tomorrow after breakfast and meditation. I would recommend that all of you who have cloaks wear them to protect your heads even if you are wearing your uniforms.”

Raphael did get in a short nap before the next meal, as well as some cold tea. When he emerged from his sleeping room and came out onto the gallery above the main great room, he heard strange voices. There were four Morovians standing there speaking to Ramirez. They were gesticulating and talking quite loudly in a rapid Morovian dialect. One of the men felt Raphael looking down at them from above and signed as much to his companions. Then, almost as one, the men bowed down. Raphael immediately looked around for his Eagles and relaxed as Milo padded up to him, commenting, “My lord, Chief Ramirez has visitors – oh, look, he is waving for you to come join them. We will attend you.”

By the time Raphael reached Chief Ramirez and his visitors, he had gathered quite a parade, with a suspicious Monteras, a concerned Salaniel, four hyperalert Eagles, and an amused Master Zang following close behind him. As he reached the floor, Raphael heard a shout and looked up to see Francis wave at him, “You’re awake, Uncle!” and then begin to also head to the stairs. Raphael came up beside Ramirez and inquired, “Well, Chief Ramirez, are you going to introduce these men to me?”

Ramirez smiled and nodded, “Certainly, my lord; these are some of my fellow chieftains, merchants all, who also act as representatives for their families at the Morovian High Council. They came here to complain that I have been keeping you and Master Francis all to myself. They wish to meet with you and speak to you at length about their concerns for Morova. Perhaps you would like to hear them out, my lord?”

All the chieftains gave Raphael another bow. Then, the closest one to Chief Ramirez, who appeared to be the group’s spokesman approached slightly and gave another short bow. He looked up nervously as Milo and Loki padded up silently behind Raphael to stand, glaring down at the strangers, but bravely cleared his throat and began, “Welcome to Morova, Lord Raphael. We merely wanted to extend our invitation for you and Master Francis VaCoupe to attend our next Morovian High Council which will be held in three days from now. We would like others of our people an opportunity to meet our important guests. Chief Ramirez has been keeping you to himself far too much, my lord.”

Raphael smiled in response. Even though he had only been in office as regent for a couple of months, he was getting accustomed to being the center of attention… and of people wanting to get his attention directed towards what they deemed as items important to be handled. He gave a nod and gestured towards Commander DeAires, “Gentlemen, of course, Francis and I will attend your next meeting of the Council. Please speak to my military aide and personal assistant, Commander DeAires, here, to make any necessary arrangements for our appearance. I would appreciate first receiving a list of your concerns. Be sure to place the most important items at the top of the list in case there isn’t enough time to address them all. And if I can be allowed to speak for a short time to the representatives present, I would like to address my concerns about Morova, as well as my impressions on the progress the citizens seem to be making now that the stresses of war have been lifted from their daily lives. Now, is that all, gentlemen? I smell dinner waiting and I am quite famished. I know Master Matteo would be upset if we let his efforts go to naught!”

With that, Raphael graciously nodded, turned, and left the great room, heading to the patio outdoors for the evening meal. The astonished representatives stared after him for a minute until Commander DeAires stepped up and requested the list that Raphael asked about. Apparently, the men had hoped to speak immediately to the Regent and were unprepared, so DeAires asked them to forward a list of priorities in the next day or so. Then, he, too, bowed and left the room. His departure was guarded by two hyperalert Eagles, Garry, and Earl, who stood at the entrance to the outside garden where Raphael and the other party members had disappeared.

Chief Ramirez refrained from grinning as he turned to his companions and shrugged his shoulders. He commented, “What can I say, gentlemen? It would appear our Regent has swiftly learned to delegate. Now, if I were you, go home, talk it over, and decide on three to five important items to present to the Regent while he is present here on Morova – or wait to have the items presented at the next High Council in Alyona. Remember, Lord Raphael does not live here and has not come prepared to address all of your concerns on this visit. He is merely here to witness the progress we have made since the end of the war. He truly understands and appreciates that many are the needs for our people and those of other worlds, as well, yet, he is but one man and incapable of answering all of your questions, especially when he is unprepared. I will see that he receives your list before the High Council convenes in three days. I look forward to seeing you all there. Now, I am hungry also and should join my guests. Thank you for coming to the house!”

With that, the representatives found themselves alone in the great room, the host having deserted them to attend to his guests. Glancing at each other and then, more warily at the nearby massive Eagles, they too shrugged their shoulders and left the house quietly.

When Ramirez joined his guests, he laughed and said, “I think I will have to hire one of my cousins as a major domo, to monitor the door and courtyard. I apologize my lord for this minor confrontation with my impatient compatriots. They do not fully understand how important it is for you and Master Francis to view our world without prejudice. In other words, you must make your own determinations on how you feel here. Now that I know some of what you suffered on Morova in your previous life and this one, I can appreciate your reluctance in coming here. Since you are apparently eager to heal emotionally as well as physically from your experiences, you should be granted the time to heal. I do not believe that many of the Morovian representatives fully understand your profound connection to Morova and what you will be in the future as you chose to serve alongside Lady Chokama.”

Raphael paused as he took a sip of tea and then nodded, “Juan – thank you for your kind consideration. I find it interesting to observe how each of the planetary inhabitants respond or don’t in terms of needing assistance… or insist in being left-alone. We have encountered extremes of both cases. On Airus and Maia, it was necessary to intervene with military force due to the continued presence of enemy forces or individuals tainted with enemy devices. On Krey, we found that some individuals had also been implanted but not affected to the same degree due to the people’s superior mental abilities which worked in blocking the implants from successfully taking over their bodies. And here… well, you are quite aware of what happened. Yet, on Vey and Serana, the people are quite independent and without need of outside assistance. My grandfather, retired Commander Mahaelion, explained that the Seranians had a long tradition of mutual cooperation. Whenever anything needed to be done, the neighbors would automatically pitch in to help. I was able to arrange for a talented Seranian team of workers, along with some stonemasons from Medina, to visit Airus to assist some of the people near the city of Babbos since many farms and villages in the region were ravaged by enemy troops left behind after the war. I find that each of our worlds is so very different that one solution cannot possibly cover all possible situations. I would like to see that the worst of the issues is presented to the Council and then, each Council present on the various Worlds need to determine what should next be addressed. There is much to do, but it will take time, manpower, and credits as well as a great deal of patience for all involved.”

Chief Ramirez nodded, very pleased to hear the practical approach of this new Regent. He knew that Raphael was doing what he deemed necessary to address the priorities as indicated by the recent events noted on Maia and Airus. The primary objective of those within the Command, which included Lord Raphael as he was a commander, to stabilize and clear the worlds of any remaining alien impact, whether coming from enemy agents, implanted individuals, or the physical effects of attacks where housing is required for a planetary population. For now, other items would have to take a backseat and wait their turn to be addressed. Practical concerns like seeing that all citizens have their basic needs of lodging, food, water, and education, would have to take priority for a while, until the various cultures and societies could re-establish themselves.

As the company shared a pleasant meal, Raphael, Francis, and Gareth offered their own observations as to what should be important for the Morovians to address first while their culture was transitioning from the traditional nomadic existence to one that was more settled in nature. Ramirez thanked the men for their observations and opinions. He said, “As a formerly very mobile people, we are used to handling our own resources and living off what the land provides, as well as actively trading for those goods that we cannot find or make locally. We might need some assistance with building houses for all of our families since the profession of stonemasonry is not one typically taught on Morova. Still, we can certainly build houses from adobe bricks, which has been a traditional building material used in our cities and towns. Some of the soils on the Planet do contain elements of clay and certainly sand so can be used to make very good bricks, whether sun-dried or kiln fired. Perhaps you know of some masons who could teach our people how to build using our native materials?”

Raphael grinned and replied, “My eldest son, Jychondria, is mated to a stonemason’s daughter. I am sure that one of Master Franco’s sons could be borrowed for a time in order to instruct some local men who could then go on to instruct some more of their fellows on building techniques. However, from what I have observed, Morovian architecture is not lacking in finesse and suitability given the hot climate. After all, it is much cooler inside the house and other buildings than when outside, given the thick walls of the structures. Do many of the houses have basements? On Morova, our compounds are dug down sometimes up to six levels below the surface since our summers can get so intensely hot.”

Ramirez was somewhat incredulous at the subterranean extent of the Medinian houses. He gasped, “Six levels? What kinds of stairs are utilized?”

“Ah, we have access to very hard granite, heavy basalts and andesite which make for wonderful steps. Most of the other building materials are either sandstone or adobe brick for the surface portions of the buildings. Our own home in Medina is thousands of years old. Since Medina is not given to having many earthquakes or volcanic eruptions, the buildings have stood quite sturdily through the many ages since originally constructed,” replied Raphael. “The VaCoupe House now has three levels below ground, two of them dedicated to housing the residents that now number over 150 souls. The lowest level is for storage, although it could easily be converted into living space if needed in the future.”

“It certainly is instructive to visit the various cultures and peoples to see what is used for building and organizing settlements,” remarked Francis. “Then, eventually we need to see that those worlds that are suitable for growing various crops have people resettled upon them. I know many of our smaller worlds suffered terribly during the long wars, since they didn’t have enough people on them to defend their territory or were too isolated from the larger worlds.”

“I encountered a few of those worlds myself during my short stint on ships in the Command,” replied Raphael… “as well as during my time as Lord Delos when I was being mentored by Lord Lyonell.”

“Isn’t Lord Lyonell now one of your foster sons, my lord?” asked Mistress Mathidia.

Yes, I helped raise him from age six. He attended school alongside my eldest son, Jychondria. They even served together on the same ship, The Golden Falcon, for over a decade. Lyonell is still stationed on her now. Jychondria has recently changed his focus back to building ships and is currently working out of Elexa and living in Jolf. He commutes daily to Elexa using one of the original golden ships that I discovered inside the ancient Feline Outpost near Jolf,” replied Raphael, who suddenly missed his family on Medina. He commented after a brief pause, “While I am open to attending the Morovian High Council in a couple of days, I would like to end this visit in about five days. I am eager to return home to see my family and to check up on how my mate’s pregnancy is progressing. Then, in another week or so I will have to return to Alyona and attend High Council there. While I certainly haven’t been able to see much here on Morova, I do have a better sense of what is needed and how well the people are progressing in their bid to rebuild their lives after the war. In all, I am well pleased with both what I have seen and felt, Chief Ramirez.”

Chief Ramirez nodded and replied, “Well, then, we shall go visit a few nearby desert communities tomorrow so you can see how those people are faring. I know things have changed greatly since your first Pleiadian lifetime here – probably even since Commander DeAires was a boy, too. Now, let us finish the meal and each go to our tonight’s rest.”

The next day, the party set out early, soon after meditation at the Temple. The men had taken viscars to the Temple and then drove on to the warehouse where Ramirez kept his desert hovercraft. The vehicle was large enough to hold all of the party, including the large Eagles, although room was tight for the big men. Ramirez chuckled to see the guards tucked in like luggage, while he, Raphael, and Francis rode up front. Monteras, DeAires, and Master Zang rode in the second tier of seating.

The hovercraft passed out of the city gates and into the desert beyond. Instantly, the smell of the desert brought tears to the eyes of both Salaniel and Raphael, as long-suppressed memories began to rise up to be released. Salaniel laid his hand on Raphael’s shoulder as Raphael’s hand rose up to meet his; both men sighed nearly as one being. Ramirez glanced over at Raphael and smiled, “Oh, the scent of the desert; it does linger long in the memory of those who have been blessed to live in it.”

Raphael just nodded quietly, squeezed Salaniel’s hand and then returned his own to his lap, as he gazed out at the open desert. It wasn’t too long before a large clump of fat shaggy palm trees were sighted. Raphael knew the trees marked the first oasis close to the city. Soon, the hovercraft set down on the outside of a grouping of tents, as the inhabitants of this oasis preferred the old ways. Still, there were a couple of hovercraft and even some viscars resting upon the sands at the edge of the camp. As the hovercraft approached, the visitors could see a tall dignified man in robes step out of the shade of the palms to greet them.

As the hovercraft came to a rest on the sandy surface, the man from the camp stepped forth in greeting, “Chief Ramirez – I see you have brought us some visitors! Who do you have with you today, Juan? What an interesting assortment!”

Ramirez hopped out of his hovercraft and went up to give his friend a hug. Then, he turned and began introductions. The stranger was introduced as Matteo Santore Ramos, one of the agents who worked for Ramirez on Morova itself. It was apparent Ramos was a highly trusted individual. In typical desert hospitality, the family of Master Ramos also came out to greet the visitors. The oldest sons of Ramos guided the strangers into one of the largest tents. There the floors of the great tent were covered with lush thick rugs that cushioned the feet. Salaniel and Raphael intuitively went to remove their boots, both remembering desert courtesy. They signed the other men to follow their lead. Removing the boots was a sign that you trusted your host as no man would willingly go out into the desert without boots to protect the feet from the wicked thorns of the prickly desert flora and the burning sands.

Soon, the men found themselves being handed small cups of a thick dark fragrant beverage that had been sweetened with native honey. Raphael sipped the dark brew slowly knowing it was highly potent and would keep a man awake all night if drunk near sunset. Large silver platters of various delicacies were handed out to the group by giggling young women, apparently the daughters of their chief, Master Ramos. Even the ever-celibate Monteras gave the sole-eyed daughters of Ramos a second or third glance, before he actually blushed as Raphael grinned at him.

Master Ramos explained to the visitors the realities of living in the desert, with the constant threat of sandstorms, sand leaking into the tents, wild creatures joining them in the warmth of the tents, having to secure their vehicles in small tents of their own to keep them drivable. Salaniel ventured a question, “How is the water flow on this spring?”

Ramos sighed and replied, “We are fortunate to have possession of this mother of all springs. Daily she gives off enough water to supply thirty people and their animals. We plan to build a family compound here for my family and my cousins’ families. The oasis should be able to hold three families without issue. And we are close enough to the city where we can go to obtain fresh supplies when they are needed. It is an excellent location. Commander DeAires, have you lived in the desert, too? You have the look of our people.”

Salaniel nodded and replied, “There are actually three of us here who were born to the desert – Commander Monteras and me. Plus, although he does not have the look of our people now, in his first life as a Pleiadian, even Lord Raphael lived and traveled upon these desert lands with his family. He was then my youngest son.”

“Ah, then, my lord, you feel the call, too? Of the desert, the ability to wander freely across the land without limitation?” commented Ramos, then he sighed once more, “Yet, due to the wars, our people are now putting down roots and are not as mobile as we once were… when you were a young Morovian boy. Still, my sons and I travel many places to gather goods for Chief Ramirez to sell in the marketplaces across Morova. We receive a percentage of all that is sold, so we also prosper. Still, we would rather remain living outside of the confining walls of the city proper. You understand, my lord?”

Raphael nodded, “Indeed I do, Master Ramos. Once as that same boy, I ran away from a boarding school after my first family was murdered by slavers. I didn’t want to be hemmed inside buildings, walls, and gates. I paid dearly for my audacity in running away from adult authority.”

“Ah, yes… it is difficult for one boy to live alone in the desert. It is why we have large, tightly knitted families. We have learned the value of cooperation. Many hands to perform the daily tasks, to keep our artisans happy and fed, the tents or houses clean and spotless, the gardens tilled. Both men and women perform tasks to see that all gets done in a timely fashion. Children are taught early the value of hard work and cooperation. We do not have unruly children, my lord. You were probably upset with the death of your loved ones and the destruction of the flow of your young life. Yet, now you have returned and due to your past experiences, you have a greater understanding of how life functions better when we all work together as one. Is that not so, my lord,” said Master Ramos.

Yes, Master Ramos – and it is what I would like to see all of our worlds do, work together for the good of the whole Federation. Of course, we have great diversity from planet to planet; yet, we can all benefit from our particular gifts and talents. You, the Morovian people are our traders. You have a natural inclination to explore, trade, and visit with other peoples, while the inhabitants of another world may be less amenable to doing such things. So, the Morovians remain our traders, practicing their skills passed down to them by their fathers. I know that I appreciate the beauty of the designs and textiles produced by your people, Master Ramos,” remarked Raphael. “Do you have beaders working here among your family?”

“Oh, yes, my lord; my mate, Rosalie, is already hard at work on one of her projects in another tent. My daughters will rejoin her when we are done here. Then, I also have work to do before the heat of the day. Yet, I feel honored to have met you and Master Francis. I am content that the reins of our Federation are being held by one who is wise, cautious, industrious, and compassionate… such as yourself. You are also the mentor of our young lord to be, Master Francis?” Ramos glanced over to Francis, who blushed as the attention of those present settled on him.

Francis finally spoke up, “Master Ramos, my uncle… now, my stepfather, has been my mentor for over a decade. I have two primary instructors right now, including Master Mei Li Zang of Vey, who recently joined our company when we visited Vey during our long tour. Master Zang is also a very talented and powerful healer and has greatly aided in the improvement of my stepfather’s health.”

“That is good to hear, my lord, Master Francis. Welcome to Morova, Master Zang. We do not see many Veyans here on Morova, although we are aware of the talents and gifts of your intelligent race. You are very welcome,” replied Master Ramos.

Raphael could feel the heat of the day increasing, so he signed Ramirez that they should be leaving the Ramos Family. He rose and gave Master Ramos a brief bow, “I want to thank you, Master Ramos, for your hospitality and welcome. It does remind me of the days when I was very young and living in the tents of Anor DeAires… who is standing here beside me, once again, in the person of my military aide, Commander DeAires.”

“What a marvel to learn, my lord,” commented Master Ramos. “It is clear that you have a strong connection to Morova… and I have heard stories that those ties will be stronger yet in another lifetime.”

“Yes, in my next life, I intend to reincarnate on Morova, perhaps among the kin of Lady Chokama herself, and then embark on official training as a shaman. I want to aid in the healing of our Worlds from the effects of the long and desperate wars. And now, Master Ramos, we must go. We do not want to keep you or your family members from their duties. It has been a joy to meet you and a few members of your large family. Fare well!” Raphael signed for the rest of the party to rejoin him and climb back into the hovercraft. The men gaily waved at their hosts and then departed, heading even further out into the bright white, ochre, reddish-brown, and orange sands of the Morovian desert.

The party stopped briefly at another camp and were introduced to the head of this family, who turned out to be distant cousins of Ramirez himself. The chieftain explained, “My aunt mated this man’s father; thus, we are cousins after a fashion. Santelli, please greet our present Regent, Lord Raphael Kantor-VaCoupe, and our future heir, Master Francis VaCoupe. They are here on their first post-war visit to Morova and will be attending at least the first day of our Morovian High Council.”

Santelli looked slightly older than his cousin and surveyed Raphael with his piercing dark blue eyes. He commented, “Raphael Kantor…? You were the youngest son of Lord TorSeth Kantor, weren’t you? I remember when we decided to send you and your elder brother to Alyona after the death of your unfortunate parents. I see that you have largely recovered from that… experience, my lord, and have come into a great fortune? It is an honor to mentor our young heir and a great duty. I see you have many loyal companions along with you to see that you and our heir are kept safe. Your Eagles are… impressive, my lord, especially the great Felines.”

“Yes, yes… Milo and Loki, and my other Eagles have proven to be indispensable to me, especially with all the traveling and new duties I have taken on since the death of my adopted father, Lord VaCoupe. Now, how is your family faring? I see you have begun to construct some houses and more permanent structures. Are you beginning to build what will amount to a family compound here, Master Santelli?” replied Raphael, eager to get the attention off of himself.

Yes, my lord; my sons and I and some other cousins are in the process of building a family compound. We hope to be able to sustain at least five families here. We are fortunate to be located to a lovely large oasis that pumps several hundred gallons of water out of its springs daily. There is even enough to grow some date trees who thrive on our alkaline soils here. When those trees are established, we will be able to grow other plants that require a little shade from our intense sun. Would you like some more lemonade, my lord? We get the lemons from another cousin who raises them in his own backyard in the city,” replied Santelli.

Raphael nodded and remarked, “It is good to see that your family is planning for the future, while you work hard in the present.” He turned to Chief Ramirez and smiled, “On the whole, from what I have observed, the Morovian people are proving quite adaptable and are apparently adjusting well since the war stopped. I know there is still healing to be done, but it is also therapeutic to find useful work in the meantime.”

Ramirez noted that Lord Raphael appeared to be flagging somewhat; the midday heat of Morova could be intense and it was ‘summer’. He spoke up, “Thank you, Santelli, for taking some time away from your busy day, but I see I must return my guests to the city. They are not used to our heat. Thank you, my friend. I shall see you at the Council meeting?”

Santelli nodded, “Of course, Ramirez – I would not miss it for anything, especially when we are going to have such honored guests present. My lord, it has been a pleasure to meet you. I hope you can return to Morova again in the future. By then, perhaps I will be able to show our new family compound. We are going to pipe in water to fill a great communal bath for the family members so they can cool off during the day. Now, enjoy the rest of your stay. My friend and cousin, Ramirez, is a wonderful host. Good-bye, everyone!”

Raphael volunteered to drive the hovercraft after he received brief instruction from Ramirez and off the party went, returning for whence they came, back to PoLiafee. Soon, after entering the gates of the city, Raphael remarked, “Thank you, Ramirez, for sponsoring our visit here. I know that acting as our guide and host is taking you away from your business and family activities, but this visit has given me a better feel for the industry and indefatigable nature of the Morovian people. You do seem to be recovering very well after the onslaught of the war. And despite all the people suffered, your strong resilience is making it possible for your people to heal quickly. It is good to see as I highly value the people of Morova.”

“I and my family are honored to have the opportunity to play host to you, my lord. I feel like I have had a rare opportunity to see more of the person who is now our Regent, a truly humble, generous, and kind man who displays his concern for others, while allowing them to share their own gifts. Now, I think all of your men would benefit from a dip in our large bathing pool. We will give you the room for the time being to give you more privacy. Then, later in the afternoon, our family will take their turn. I would suggest that you, especially, my lord, also take one of your famous naps for the rest of the afternoon. We will see you, again, for supper,” said Ramirez with a fatherly tone. He was becoming quite fond of Raphael. He was also grateful that the regency had fallen to someone who was more focused on the people’s welfare than the former regent appeared to have been. Then, he dismissed any thought about the lady; she was gone, never to return to Alyona if the rumors were true. Like all of his people, Ramirez focused on the here and now, what was before him, and what he expected to do next. He did not get involved in politics. He was a trader and a family man. Those two focuses were quite enough for anyone.

The men of the party found the bathing pool quite refreshing. However, due to the sheer size of the Eagles, Raphael and the smaller individuals were allowed to go first. Raphael would have enjoyed having the pool to himself, but he savored the cool fresh water as he and his companions splashed about. Then, wrapping a large towel around his slender frame, he stepped out of the pool and slipped on his blue Airian caftan over his nakedness. He commented briefly, “I would imagine that my stuffy cousin, Lord Pietro, has no conception of just how useful this caftan has become. It is light enough to easily pack and shakes out without wrinkles. Now, gentlemen, I think I will retreat to my sleeping pad and take a nap. Eagles, the pool is yours!”

That evening, the family and their honored visitors met again out in the garden courtyard. Salaniel, Monteras, and Francis confessed that they had been put to work while Raphael napped, helping Matteo and Mathidia with the food preparation. The family enjoyed their efforts, sipping the newly pressed fruit juices, nibbling on the crisp newly made flatbread, and eating fresh fruit bought that morning in the market.

At the end of the meal, Ramirez announced that he and his mate had decided when and how to transport Roxanee to Medina. Ramirez said, “I will travel as an escort for the Ladies VaCoupe and my daughter, when we go to Medina. We will take a shuttle there. After the Howlings are over, then I can return to Alyona with you, my lord, on your golden ship. Roxanee and her new mate, Salaniel, may still be on their honeymoon on… the little planet that the VaCoupes own? Lady Tina told me about it.”

“Towan – yes, that is the private planetoid where many VaCoupes have celebrated their honeymoons or visit for short holidays,” replied Raphael, with a nod. “Then the newly mated couple can either travel to Alyona via shuttle or wait at home in Medina until we return after High Council. It will give Salaniel and his new lady some time to be better acquainted.”

Monteras and Gareth grinned to see their companion blush like a young boy. They were aware that Salaniel was still a virgin even in his sixties and unused to the company of women. Still, they approved of him mating the intelligent, talented, and sensitive Roxanee, and binding the ties of family with the Ramirez family. Yes, it would be an interesting Howling this year in the Medina household.
